Disabled Veterans Should Get Preferred Treatment Over Better Qualified Candidates - Case Study Example

Disabled veterans spend a lot of their time serving the interests of the whole nation yet there are not adequately contributed for their service. Some disabled veterans suffer permanent injuries and disabilities in their youthful years thus making it almost impossible to secure other jobs after they leave the service (Gerber, 2000). According to utilitarianism ethics, the proper action is the one that maximizes the happiness of the whole society and reduces suffering.

Many of the veterans suffer serious disabilities while fighting for the security of the political and social progress of the country. Disabled veterans have families to feed and children to educate. It is only ideal that we implement programs that lead to more employment opportunities for disabled veterans. The government has no sufficient economic resources to provide social welfare to the disabled veterans thus they should work for themselves by getting preferential treatment in employment opportunities than higher qualified potential employees who are not disabled veterans (Gerber, 2000).

According to utilitarian ethics, the moral worth of preferential treatment to veterans will be determined by the outcome. I believe that such a move will lead to a higher employment rate in the economy thus accelerating the economic growth rate and income levels. The move will ease the burden borne by the federal government in proving social welfare services to disabled veterans (Gerber, 2000). Implementing preferential treatment of disabled veterans will promote societal equality by promoting the welfare of the socially and economically disadvantaged group in the community.

Since most disabled veterans lack adequate skills and education due to the many years they spend serving in their country, they suffer from a disadvantage in the access of employment opportunities after the disability. Implementing the preferential treatment of disabled veterans will correct the inequalities in their pay and social status in society (Gerber, 2000). According to disabled veterans’ affirmative action programs, the main goal is to increase the employment opportunities of veterans who are 30 percent or more disabled and increase job advancement opportunities.

According to affirmative action provisions, federal contractors are required by the law to recruit minorities, people with disabilities, and covered veterans. The procedures and policies should be implemented in personnel policies. According to the Supreme Court, affirmative actions or preferential treatment of veterans will not justify racial discrimination but serve governmental interests such as proving benefits to the veterans (Muhl 3). According to the case of Urbano v. Continental Airlines, Inc, the U.S Court of appeals ruled that the Airline did not contravene the Pregnancy discrimination Act by having a transfer policy that permitted injured employees to transfer to lighter duties (Muhl, 5). According to the opponents, all citizens should have equal chances of employment notwithstanding any disability. According to deontological ethics, our actions should be guided by the existing rules and duties. According to Kant’s deontology, some things that appear good are not good intrinsically since they lead to another suffering.

According to the categorical imperative, people should act according to universal law and act as an end but not a means. There are numerous provisions that advance equal opportunities for all in employment matters. Some of the laws include the Equal pay Act of 1963, the Civil rights Act of 1964, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. According to Equal Opportunity Employment laws, every citizen should have equal opportunities to employment regardless of his gender, race, color, age, and disability. In this case, preferential treatment of disabled veterans will violate the rights of the order of better-qualified candidates who are not disabled veterans (Muhl 4).

Conclusion I believe that the highest sacrifice that a human being can make is to sacrifice his education and fight for the security of his or her country. If one is disabled in defense of the nation, he or she should receive preferential treatment than better-qualified candidates in the jobs which he or she is qualified to perform. The current policies on veterans will influence how future generations will respond towards the service of their nation especially in defense matters. To let disabled veterans suffer in society is simply convincing the public that service to the nation is not rewarded.

Proving preferential treatment to disabled veterans will reduce the economic inequalities in society and reduce their suffering.
