Topic: Entrepreneurship Biography Jay Townsend Jay Townsend is a small entrepreneur based in New York and has been living in the for morethan 30 years. He is a graduate from Cornell University and has set up his small business after gaining much experience in his chosen career. His firm called “Townsend Group” is a consulting and marketing research firm that provided consulting services and advertising to companies and public personalities. In his 20s he worked as an employee to senate finance committee and assisted in formulating strategies to enhance the New York City’s fiscal adversities. According to (Townsend for), “After completing his graduate education at Purdue University, Townsend was hired as an analyst in a New York City market research firm. At age 32, he became a partner, supervising the work of 13 employees in a company with clients in several states” Jay is well known for his hardship in advertising field and have won national award thrice for his creative advertisings. He has started his company Townsend Group in 1993 which went on to gain prosperity around United States for its quality customer service. He is also known for his valuable contribution in television commercials and has also received national award for the same. He is a happy family man accompanied with his wife and also is a father of five children who were raised in Indiana farm. Jay have had wide experience in consulting and advertising field which have gained him the confidence to start his own business venture very early in his career. Challenges faced by Jay Townsend Starting a venture is always a challenge but if one has the will and determination to move on with it then one can stop him from achieving his goal. When Jay started his business firm, Townsend Group in his early years, all he had was his experience in the advertising and consulting field. He had intense spirit and energy to start his own enterprise but the main problem was capital .He never had the finance to start his business and was very skeptical about his budding business inspirations. In the interview (Townsend) Mentioned that, “One of the biggest of problem I faced was obtaining finance, because many a times young entrepreneurs do not have assets or credit history to acquire loan form a bank”. However, Jay was confident of his business motivation and created a well versed business plan which impressed the bank and led to a loan to start his business. Jay remembers that starting the business was a very stressful and time consuming effort and main challenge was getting introduced to new customers and competitive market. He explains that in the beginning days of his business venture, the customer s were immensely skeptical about choosing his service. He had to convince them deeply and make them believe that his service was the best with comparatively lesser price. Jay explains that he had to bring out the multi talented capability of him to nurture his young business enterpreneurship.He also recalls that the day to day operations were a challenge to him every day and brought along with it new problems and opportunities to him. Failures in his business life Like any other business man, Jay also had to overcome many failures and obstacles in his business life. He mentioned that he was devastated and destabilized by these moments and had to have immense will power to overcome such failures. One of the negative situations was when there was downturn in the economic climate and clients were arguing on the price of the advertising campaigns and consulting services. At this point, Jay exclaims that he lost his confidence significantly and had none to turn on except his wife .He remembers that his wife had been of great help at times of collapsing situations in his business years. He explained that grabbing on to the confidence was the hardest element of all experience to deal with. During this moment he also was in a need of handsome amount of finance and this was tackled with some loans available from some friendly banking staff. The worst part was when his business partners lost confidence in him and backed off from business which left him in despair and gave a deserted feeling. Jay claims that dealing with unscrupulous business partner and surprising nature of business were less complicated that reestablishing confidence level in him. But as days passed he realized that most of his employees and other business counterparts have not lost confidence in him and his capabilities. As per (Townsend) “Most of what makes confidence in a personality is what confidence allows you to achieve. Confidence mainly allow people to achieve their goal in a challenging environment and reestablish his faith and trust in”   His sole business and its success Jay is an entrepreneur with a sole business firm and he concentrated all his efforts and abilities on it Even though he faced difficulties and challenges in his venture, later he achieved equivalent proportion of success and prosperity in his endeavors. Jay mentioned that his passion for his business made him very successful in advertising and consulting field. He was very experimental with his creative skills and this led to formulation of advertisement campaigns which won him national awards and accreditions.The business firm of Jay invaded the hearts of his clients due to the quality of services and amount of time they offered to ensure valuable service to them. Jay has made customers and business partners an integral part of his business life. Jay consistently believed in improving and updating his creations when it was the question of advertisement campaigns. His firm has achieved recognition due to its cost effectiveness, dedication and customer oriented dealings when engaging with clients. Jay has achieved a remarkable status in the business world of America and among advertising firms he is a renowned identity. The Townsend enterprise has changed the world of Jay in every manner and along with his political career he experiences a well rounded fame in the country. Jay’s reason for becoming an entrepreneur Jay even from his early years had kindled the idea of being an entrepreneur and carving out a niche for himself in the business world .He had the uncontrollable passion to be something valuable in his life and dreamed of catering to the needs of the business market in a unique way. While working in the consulting firms in his early years of life, Jay understood his talents and creative power to make up advertising themes which originated much demand among customers. He also realized that he had significant interest in consulting service and can make it well in case he started his consulting firm. Jay when he left his job had doubts really whether the grass on the other side is greener as he assumed, but his confidence and belief in self made the path easier for him. Jay assertively mentioned that he had the overwhelming passion to win, be noted and acclaimed in the society. He mentioned that the force behind his success is the support and love from his employees and without them he would not have made his venture successful. According to (Townsend) “He is more thankful to his previous employers who gave him all support in learning new features of challenging business environment and consulting service tactics”. Jay also claimed that he loved to bring out the super hero in him and realized that an introduction of an entrepreneurship indeed can make him an exceptional personality. Conclusion There are so many facts to be understood from the interview with Jay Townsend a mediocre entrepreneur in New York City. The main factor which attracted me to him was the amount of energy and high spirit embedded in this charismatic business man. It is like I am seeing the same young man who has started his venture in an adverse business environment with all positive energy and determination. Generally speaking, it can be understood that an entrepreneur is not a normal man but one with exceptional courage, will power, creativity and dynamic personality. He has this ever sparking aura in him that attracts people around him to perform things which are productive and positive. It can be analyzed that starting a venture can be relatively easy, than making it a successful business firm in the competitive market. I learnt from Jay that being optimistic and realistic is the key elements to be a successful entrepreneur. “Successful entrepreneur have fire in the belly to get going but are also realistic and practical. They are not emotionally attached to their business idea and are ready to work hard to make their concept work”(Anastasi,2010)To make a business run successfully needs a lot of patience and understanding of customer needs and wants. One should be ready to suffer losses and failures and consequently to rise ahead in future with a long term success and prosperity. No business is a cake walk, but a tremendous team work, conceptualizing of thrilling ideas and visions and significant risk taking can make the ride an adventurous experience. Work cited Anastasi, T.
