Various things including increase in yields characterize biotechnology as well as offering built in protection against insect damage, prevention of soil erosion, and eventually reduce poverty by increasing food security for a growing population. However, biotechnology has had serious effects on both human and enhanced climatic changes. Genetically Modified Organisms are organisms whose genetic materials (DNA) are technologically altered through the process of modern biotechnology or gene technology. GMO are developed because they are perceived to be cheaper, durable and with nutritional value as well as crop protection. According to Pirro different agricultural technologies such as fallowing, irrigation, canning, use of silos, and other biological technologies have significantly improved food supply worldwide (124). Man has put immense attempt in supplying sufficient amount of food on his table using various methods such as giving animals particular hormones and chemicals that make them huge and overweight. Animals grow at a faster rate than before and their life span is increased significantly by controlling numerous diseases that may cause early death. Increased control of spoilt food via introduction many food preservative methods is another mechanism in which human being has increased food supply (Premanandh 38-42). Food can stay for extremely lengthy time before going bad by using methods such as canning and silos for storing grains. These methods make plants and animals to be pest and disease resistance, herbicide, cold and drought tolerance. Traditional farming was very good and environmental friendly since there was rare signs of environmental degradation as farmers were concerned with ecological changes. The current capital-technology intensive farming has largely led to serious environmental degradation because the farmers and scientist only focus on long-term sustainability of food production and low cost food. Technology has really contributed to monoculture through the introduction of agrochemical that has provided fertilizers, insecticides, and pesticides. The ever-increasing population and the current global hunger are what prompt the use of new technologies, which are very harmful in the society. This piece of writing criticizes and assesses some of the strategies put in place to feed ever-growing global population (Pirro 124). It is unfortunate that most countries have resorted to monoculture as one of the ways of producing food in large scale to feed the huge population. However, the need to maximize profit through specialization thus boosting country’s economy is the main cause of monoculture in many countries. It is evident that modernized agriculture has brought immense negative contributions in the ecological system and further extended the influence on peoples’ lives, culture, political and social status. Mechanized farming has led to introduction of pesticides, fertilizers and even genetically Engineered Food (Toft 225-232). Nevertheless, use of fertilizers and pesticides has greatly depleted and polluted soil, water and every other useful resource used in farming thus causing serious consequences on the environment (Gritzner 59-65).
