Essay A Defining Moment The Turnaround Casey Lam, a village boy from Hong Kong started facing and countering challenges from his very childhood. He suffered a strong sense of inferiority complex for not being able to earn good grades in school. Casey’s below expectation results earned the rebuke of his family; teachers and friends making him feel darkness all around. He continuously fumbled in the darkness of his life to get hold of a moment that in turn would help in transforming his life. The first turnaround came when Casey Lam inspired by a TV Show of David Copperfield decided in trying his hands in magical tricks. On having leant magic, Casey Lam started getting calls for showing his tricks. Casey Lam, being a Christian helped him in gaining a call from the Church to show his magical tricks in entertaining disabled people admitted in hospitals. This event was a turnaround for Casey for he who never dreamt of being able to gain applauds and praise was able to earn the same from the disabled people. This turnaround in Casey’s life triggered the zeal to challenge and discover more about him. Filled with self-confidence, Casey decided to come down to United States to pursue higher studies. This decision of Casey proved to be a challenge to his friends, family and teachers in Hong Kong that thought of him as a complete waste. Although, Casey completed his schooling in Hong Kong he took a serious challenge of coming down to America to pursue higher studies by gaining admission into a college. He in such endeavors was trying to break-free from his previous stature of self-inferiority. Casey Lam started to love freedom and thus decided to continue with his challenging task by coming down to United States. Casey Lam states in such regard, “I chose America for my future challenging tasks for the region reflects a sense of spontaneous freedom” (Lam, 1). Way back in 2008, Casey’s decision of coming down to America to further challenge his previous situation did not involve a smooth track. Rather, Casey being of Chinese origin felt it quite hard to effectively adapt to the American way of living and social customs. He got his admissions in California College San Diego to pursue Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (“Business Courses”). Within such hardships, Casey also dreamt of a brighter and a more promising future. As Casey states, “Getting entry to a Business Management college signifies landing on a dream job with a fat salary. However, to me the course helped in enhancing my skills to pursue an entrepreneurial career in the future” (Lam, 2). Memory of his bygone days still haunted him when he faced rebukes from his friends, teachers and family members for not being able to perform well. However, in America he felt that it was the decision of the Almighty to let him face adversities so as to help create an inner drive in him to stand up against unfair treatment. Casey started working more seriously in the college both pertaining to him being a non-native and also to effectively learn the process of managing businesses. However, Casey’s parents and friends suffering from the idea that he would fail in such assignments continually went on deterring him from taking such challenges and to return back. Casey, on the other hand worked on the principle of self motivation by setting small and achievable goals. His endeavors and achievements pertaining to such small goals helped him in gaining accolades thus cementing further Casey Lam’s strive to excel. Casey herein realized that his coming down to America and getting a chance in a management college is only possible through God’s grace on him. He further realized that it is only through God’s grace that he can think big and excel in life. Though Casey Lam came down to America to pursue his higher education living and studying in a foreign country like United States was not at all smooth for him. In addition to the factors of self-alienation which he continually countered and challenged in the college campus while tending to mix and communicate with American and Hispanic people, Casey countered another challenge of earning a part-time job. To leave and continue funding for his studies, Casey Lam managed to get a job of a sales staff in a Wal-Mart store (Bergdahl, 141). This, part-time job led him to sharpen both his business acumen while at the same time enhanced his skills and motivation to do something meaningful in life. At the workplace level, Casey also started facing different challenges for being a novice to such profession and also in being of Chinese origin. Casey, rather recalled his previous Hong Kong days in how he managed to learn the tricks of magic to earn the first ever applaud and appraise from the disabled spectators. The memory filled in him thoughts to raise his self-confidence and thereby to help him raise newer challenges to live a better life. As Casey puts the situation in his own words, “The recall of the Hong Kong challenge days helped in raising my spirits of self-confidence and thereby instilled in me the power to counter the several adversities faced in the working sector in Wal-Mart” (Lam, 3). The workplace rules practiced in Wal-Mart did not appear to him employee friendly. It had long working hours that made him feel strained to cope up with the energy needed to continue with his management studies. Days were there when after returning from work and college, Casey did not even have the energy to cook and thus went on being starved the whole night. However, such troubles and days of penance failed to deter him from gaining the degree enrolled for in the college. Finally, during 2011 Casey Lam completed with the Bachelors program in Business Management and thereby gained a passport to start up with his own new venture. Life in United States made Casey gradually realize his potential of eking out a living all alone thereby enhancing his self-confidence. Nevertheless, Casey Lam did not get deterred from the above challenges coming up in his life and thus again gained the courage of opening up an entrepreneurial venture. Casey developed an outsourcing agency that would work in the development of preparatory test papers for gaining chance in management colleges of United States. This was a challenging task for it meant that Casey was needed to team up with tutorial centers located in the region and to build effective relationship to potentially build up a market for the papers designed. One year down the line Casey recalls, “The first business contract gained from a tutorial agency to ship around 50 sets of test papers helped me to enhance my confidence that I am moving in the right direction” (Lam, 4). Further, Casey also required to continually updating his and his colleagues’ knowledge pertaining to the changes being brought about in the test paper development patterns by the management associations of the region. Casey Lam also required honing up his management and entrepreneurial skills to help attract people from management colleges to join his firm and thereby to develop his business. Casey realized that God had gifted him with a Midas touch that in turn helps him to excel in different walks of life. Magic of self-confidence thus continually flows from his hands right from the defining moment of his magic show in Hong-Kong. However, he declined from turning complacent and endeavored to gain further heights in his life and business. The above stages in Casey Lam’s life reflect the different challenges faced by him from time to time right from his junior to senior days and also pertaining to the period of his employment. The stages reflect that how Casey through his traits of self-motivation and self-inspiration went on countering the difficulties emerging in the different stages that eventually helped him emerge as a successful entrepreneur. Henceforth, the paper gains effectiveness in duly reflecting that how Casey Lam gained the potential in due course to meet the challenge thrown to his family, teachers and friends of turning out to be a successful person and not a sheer waste. Thus, Casey Lam’s decision of coming down to America to pursue his education and career evidently proved to be a turnaround in his life. It also taught Casey Lam to counter different adversities and challenges emerging during his stay in a foreign country through gaining on in self-confidence. His development of self-confidence helped him to remove the idea of fear from his mind and inferiority from his mind and helped him to excel in his life. Casey Lam reflected continual dependence on God to help develop on his spirits and potentials. Works Cited Bergdahl, Michael.
