Name Professor Course Date One new change building One new change-building complex is located on the new change, along the road that links Cannon street with Cheapside. The one new change building is nested entirely within the Bread street ward, the part of the city that is largely associated with markets and retailing. Moreover, the building is located on the eastern side of the St. Paul’s Cathedral. The closest London underground stations located close to this building include the Mansion house and St. Paul’s. The name “one new change” is derived from the highway that passes between the complex and the St. Paul’s. This complex was a post war building that replaced the older street, which was known as old change street (Johnson 13). The building complex is bordered to the north by Cheapside, to the south by Watling Street, Bread Street borders it to the east, and New Change is to the west. Towards the centre of the north and south arcade lies the Cheapside passage and then the arcade on the east – west location is the New Change passage. The location of the One New Change Building has played a major role in the manner in which the complex was designed. The location being London’s historical centre which was basically a market place determined the purpose for which the building was meant to serve. Having a history of market and retail, the complex had to be a shopping centre (Topp 557). To preserve this heritage, the complex was given a design that suited the function and it uniquely transformed the marketplace into a shopping centre. Furthermore, the One New Change Complex has won the Royal Institute for British Architects (RIBA) award for its excellent design and works of architecture. RIBA awards are arguably among the awards presented after rigorous vetting process. The London’s RIBA awards are only presented to buildings that are of high standards and have demonstrated a sense of excellence. This was demonstrated by the One New Change building in terms of architecture and design. The RIBA awards presented to this building was a sign and indication that it was of high standards and above all, excellent. The quality standards for the building were determined in terms of its sustainability and uniqueness. In the design of the building, Jean Nouvel incorporated a number of renewable energy sources such as geothermal heating technology, solar control glazing, and a wide green roof area accessible by all members of the public. The green roof was meant to encourage biodiversity at the city centre, provide people with a place to eat and relax and even have bird’s eye view of places within the city such as St. Pauls. This quality indeed guarantees RIBA award. This space is successful since it serves the exact purpose to which it was meant. It holds shopping centers, shops, cafeterias, and hotels among other things. The central location makes it a strategic point for business interactions as well as place where people can sit and just appreciate the true works of nature. The high of the building enables it to provide the bird’s eye view of major places in town such as St.Paul’s. Moreover, the ability of the space to support renewable energy sources such as solar and geothermal makes it strategic for trade since electrical energy is not a major issue (Fullman 46). The space functions relatively well, it provides a point of interaction for people wishing to trade. The six storey complex offers sufficient space for businesses to interact freely with their customers. Places like the green roof was designed with a number of stepped terraces and was meant to promote biodiversity within the city centre (Pocket London Travel Guide 31). People wishing to meet and eat have alternative of coming to this place and just enjoying the sweet viewpoint. Despite being a trade centre, this region offers a perfect environment for relaxation and unwinding after a long period of working. With the space being 560,000 square feet, this building has been estimated to be the equivalent of 12 football pitches. As well, the complex provides an office space capable of accommodating over 3000 staff members. Despite the beauty and the charm presented by the One New Change complex, there are certain interesting facts about the centre that makes it even more blissful. The building stands at 560,000 square feet, a figure that is equivalent to over twelve football pitches. The retail space in this building measures 220,000 sq feet and the office space occupying330, 000 sq feet and the office space will be in a position to accommodate 3000 office workers. In addition, the external cladding of the building comprises of 6,500 glass panes each of different shapes, sizes, and color. The above facts are true, though may seem exaggerated and overstated. The space has that great capability and can serve a large area of people hence making it ideal for a market or a shopping centre (Fullman and Donald 16). People interact with the space differently depending on their intentions. The space is meant to accommodate a large number of people who come shopping as well as to take their meals. The way that an individual relates with this space is influenced by the nature of needs they seek. The businesspersons and women within the space will often concentrate on their offices. People intending to buy products and services also move within the space in pursuit of the same. There are also the people moving into the building to take meals or drinks, such persons move to the restaurant sections located towards the rooftops. Gaining access to the building is equally easy, one can choose to use the stairs or use the lifts, whichever means that sounds convenient to them. Moreover, the interaction is free and people can use the premises irrespective of their race, culture, or even color. Spending time in this space makes me feel very comfortable as well as relaxed. The complex brings together a wide variety of things as a market and shopping centers. For this reason, I get to interact with people and friends from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The height of the building is much more impressive, with six storeys, one can choose to move to the roof top and just sit down to enjoy the beauty of nature. (Dalton and Deborah 76) The green top having been made into terraces provides a perfect region where friends can meet and chat over meals or beverages. Moreover, after a long week at school, the perfect place I can wish for is the top of the building in the green roof. From this point, I can enjoy the bird's viewpoint of the parts of the city that include the St. Paul’s which is looks beautiful from above. The biodiversity nature of the building also makes it one of the perfect places for relaxation. Works Cited Johnson, Charles .
