16- 18 Epsom Road Building Design Student Name: Course: Instructor: Date: Site description The subject site for the project in hand is 16 – 18 Epsom Road Building Design. The site is located in Ascot Vale, Victoria, Australia. It constitutes three properties, two of those (16 and 18) directly facing the Epsom road and the third, (17), positioned right behind 16 and 18. There is clear access to the site. Proposal The project associated with the location described above entails demolition of all the structures on the site. The demolition exercise will enable construction of a residential building. The residential building will constitute of three floors and apartments in different models. The whole structure is set to occupy 45.36 meters by 26.12 meters of space. This will be inclusive of the building structure, the garden, the car parking area. The structure also constitutes of a backyard space or a balcony for every room depending on the model and position of the different apartments within the building. Moreover, according to the floor plans, the first floor differs from the second and third floor. The first floor will consist of three apartments. The first-floor rooms will be composed of a living room, a kitchen, one bedroom, a study room, and a bathroom. Each apartment in this floor will occupy a space each measuring 9.04 meters by 7.51 meters. A common corridor space of 1.0 meter in width creates access to each apartment. The backyard space for each first-floor apartment will occupy an area of 9.04 meters and is accessible from the living room. A staircase in this floor will provide access to the upper floors in the building. Right at the back outside the building lies a garden. All that constitutes the first floor In continuation, the second and third floor are similar in their design. The second-floor forms of five apartments. On one side of the floor lies two rooms. The two chambers differentiate themselves by featuring two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a balcony. On the other side lies three apartments. The first apartment comprises one bedroom, a study room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The other two rooms have two bedrooms each, a spacious living room, one bathroom, a kitchen, and a balcony. A staircase and a corridor space for easy access feature to complement this floor. The third floor, as earlier stated, is a complete replication of the second floor. Five apartment rooms constitute this level with the same specifications as those on the second floor. In addition, this residential building employs present day apartment layouts in its design. Kitchens have an open layout, and the living rooms are spacious with access to private balconies. All rooms in this building have access to enough light as is required in present day accommodations. Each apartment will put into consideration all the health and hygiene factors as a necessity. Given comfort, every bedroom in each apartment will be fitted with built in robes and bathrooms. Residents are sure to acquire the best as per their expectation. Looking at accessibility, the building lies right by the Epsom Road, which serves as its main entrance. This is advantageous to both the accessibility and the marketability of the residential building. It is an assurance that the building will always have an inflow of new and potential residents. Ample and clearly marked parking space is also availed to provide service to both the residents and attendants. The building constitutes of clear entrances and easily identifiable markers to aid in guidance of the inhabitants. Staircases and corridors put in place offer proper easy access to the various apartments. The residents will surely have enjoyable experiences, as is our aim. To cater for the appearance of the building, approaches such as the use of metal claddings, glass balustrades and perforated metal on balconies are some of the considerations put in place to achieve a distinguished look. Materials used vary to be able to provide a work of architecture that does not mimic any of the other works of architecture that surround this building. The garden adds to the beautification and automatic appearance of the building. The proposed building is cognizant of the surrounding land use. To add to this proposal, the proposed building has also included the use of Environmentally Sustainable Designs (ESDs) in its implementation. We have energy generators on site for the proposed building. By this, we refer to solar panels used in this proposal. Solar panels in this project provide an alternative source of energy. The energy produced by solar panels can be converted to either light or heat energy. The solar panels are deemed a very effective way to utilize renewable and sustainable sources of energy. What happens is that they harvest energy from the sun in the form of sunlight and convert this energy to energy that aids the daily activities of the residents. This solar panel project comes as a recommendation from the Global ESD initiatives. In this proposal, solar panels provide an alternative source of electricity. The solar panels in this proposal also provide a means to heat the water used inside the building for either purpose. This provides a means to cut on the cost incurred by the use of direct current. Solar panel prices are falling as time passes according to previous observations, so this will encourage savings from its implementation. We cannot fail to mention the role this will play in efforts to solve the current global crisis of environmental degradation and global warming consequently for the use of environmentally unsustainable and unrenewable sources of energy. As a way to continue honoring the ESD initiatives, we have considered the use of rainwater tanks in this proposal. To (or “intending to”) acquiring a way of life that is environmentally sustainable, this project brings into play the use of rainwater tanks to service need for clean water the proposed building. Harvesting rainwater is a recommended way to access water globally. Rainwater is an easy way to acquire fresh water without expenses. Back this proposal, rainwater is a source of water during times of water cutbacks, not mentioning it as a way to reduce the cost incurred because of water supply. Seawater heating is another sustainable, renewable and yet a cheap source of energy. Energy from the sea is from waves. These waves are powerful enough to produce lots of energy. The sea also absorbs heat energy from the sun all day long. In most cases, the sea is warm even at nighttime. Harvesting of this energy can prove to be quite useful. In conclusion, this proposal as described above proves to be a wise investment that is worthy of all the time and resources put into it. As seen above, it will offer a serene and comfortable environment for people to live. It is a modern structure built with an aim to fulfill present day expectations when it comes to accommodation.
