Name: Instructor: Course: Date: Cheerful Chats: Alvin Boyarsky and the Art of Teaching of Critical Architecture There has been a rise in professionalism in the nineteenth century. This led to separation of various disciplines into separate bodies. In architectural sector, the body was separated into architects planners and landscape architects. This change was driven by the need by the institutions of higher learning to produce graduates who were well suited for the market. There was also a growing desire to balance between sciences, arts or liberal arts, and technology. In the nineteenth century, the architectural education responded by implementing these changes, an aspect that solidified the process of industrial production, segmentation of market and labour and differentiating between economy, politics and social power. In the past century, there were many changes in the sector that was being driven by a new generation which wanted to change the face of architecture. Boyarsky was one of the pioneers that proposed some changes in the sector. This is after going through the education system and working in the architectural sector. His persistence led to formation of International Institute of Design. This was after Boyarsky became disappointed by various upheavals that were experienced in 1968. This was mainly the lack of dialogue and absence of architecture in political discourse. The body aimed at revising and modernizing the architectural education. This is to incorporate various changes that were being experienced in the world. In addition, it aimed at bringing various renowned architects together in order to spearhead the growth of the sector. Datascape There are more questions that are arising on how to deal with morals in an era that has engulfed the architecture with chaotic theories. The sector is still contemplating on whether it should still aspire to express chaos when it’s already surrounded by it. Currently, the sector is facing a major dilemma. The more it tries to search for new and unique designs, the more it continues to produce the same things. If the sector continues to ignore these developments, then it will be denying the reality. It is become a shame to state that the architectural sector cannot be any more innovative. The new and innovative ideas by the young generation only end up being a manipulation of the past ideas. Poor organization of the sector has seen different countries put up measures to protect their urban sector from these chaos. Various psychological issues, anti-disaster patterns, lighting regulations and acoustic treatments are forming the evidence of these facts. In order to avoid these laws and by laws, there is a need to intensify research. More minds should be focused towards understanding the concepts of logic and how these aspects can be used to understand the required changes which should pushed the sector into greater heights. It’s time to go beyond demand, logic, and other artistic intuition and instead, replace all these outdated methods with research. It’s time to accept the critics and ridicules and use them to build a base for a strong architectural sector. Failure to take up these steps will lead to the collapse of the whole sector. A Different Way of Analysing, Understanding and Conceiving the City in the Work of Candilis-Josic-Woods After Second World War, there were many discussions on city designs and how to plan future cities. Many houses were built that completely detached themselves from the previous local and regional context. They were independent from the previous urban morphology. This was a sign of increased independence of architectural and urban realm. However, the detachment of architecture from the previous urban realm was faced with a lot of critics. The fact that the sector failed to underscore the public life attracted a lot of critics. The post-war France approach brought into limelight the poor modernism. However, it was stated that this tradition had not to be sought outside the modern movement. Instead, it was supposed to be searched within its confines. Candilis tried to find a link between urbanism and the past designs and what the future installed for the sector that was under the era of transformation. His interests were based on his beliefs that cities must not be stable entities. Instead, they should be by conviction the perennial urban elements with capacity to grow and change. Other argued that there was a need to encompass two concept of moving the architecture in the direction of urbanism while the other supported the importance of architectural interior. This was to ensure that the sector does not lose its shape even during the time when there were many people with varying ideas on the best strategies to be undertaken. Renewal and Tradition in the Teaching of Building Construction at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Paris: the Course of Edouard Arnaud, 1920-1934 During the International Architects’ Reunion in Milan in 1933, it was discussed that there is a need to change the architectural training in France. The changes were to be on pedagogy in order to put more focus on architectural training. The stakeholders raised different issues that needed to be incorporated but of most importance was to encourage scientific knowledge, develop new methods of constructions and ensure that the curriculum is updated to include the new changes. Arnaud introduced new changes during his teaching career which were aimed at improving the current curriculum. He gave the students in engineering different tools to approach and a method of architectural composition which was previously missing in the other teaching practice. He emphasized to the students that technical practice was not significant if the student did not know the art of composition. This strategy was supported by the council of Ecole Centrale. Although there were several challenges with the changes, he proved that there was a need to bring architect in training closer to the realization of the architectural object. Through intensive research, he was able to identify projections that connected theory and work on site. In addition, he insisted the need to link between technical teaching and architectural drawing while training future constructor. Animate Form Animation is frequently mistaken with motion. However, they are two different terms. Cinema industry is changing from moving pictures to animation. The major difference between a cinema and animation is the virtuality of inertia and that of force. Architecture is associated with motion through providing the frames which are used to add motion. Throughout history, there has been a representation of time and motion in architecture. However, there are two latest models of movement in architecture i.e. that of procession and the second one uses superimposition. Both models have been significant in supporting the Cinema industry. Nevertheless, processional time depends on static frames while formal time indexes depend mainly on multiplication and sequencing of static frames. Animation is mainly based on non-linear techniques. In this technique, motion is characterized by interaction of vectors which unfold in time perpetually and openly. Mainly, contemporary animations use both interacting forces and vectors. Other disciplines that have used time and motion structures include aeronautical design, naval design, and automobile design. Animation is dependent on architecture. Various models are designed using the concepts borrowed from architecture. Static is significant to architecture as a paradigm pf literal structure. Therefore, cinema cannot be in existence without the support of architecture. Architecture also remains the only refuge of the members of the earth society. Therefore, there is a need to explore more ways to improve the role being played by architecture in the modern society. Furthermore, there is a need to reduce the naivety of stakeholders in the sector concerning various problems being faced in the sector. The Museum for Modern Art Brooklyn neighborhood is offering exhibition models, drawings, and plans which are referred to as Low-Rise Alternatives. The alternatives are offering new solutions to the upcoming housing projects and designs. The exhibiting will showcase historical housing concepts. Since World War II, urban public housing has been building high-rise towers. However, many parents does not fancy living in them. This is because of the risks and associated with these structures. Many architects have been advocating for other economical alternatives in an attempt to avoid crisis. The UDC is trying to explore new low-rise buildings which are able to accommodate more people. Different prototypes have been designed and are waiting the reviews of the members of the public. The prototypes limit the heights of all buildings into four floors. Different designs have also been proposed in order to make it easy for supervision. There are also new configurations for suburban living. Open clusters will be used instead of the traditional street and square of most urban areas. This is to address the basic elements such as parking. In Brownsville project, prototype was adjusted in order to accommodate the existing conditions. Nevertheless, the major components of the prototype have been retained. UDC has been able to set up procedures to be followed in order to ensure that all guidelines are followed to the letter. This will be significant in enabling the body to evaluate all projects and ensure that they meet the set architectural designs. Learning from Las Vegas This book talks about Las Vegas commercial Strip and how modern architecture has changed the environment in this region. Las Vegas has portrayed that when modern architecture is well implemented, it can bring changes to be admired by the future generations. The symbols in this found here makes the city to be a communication system. Every visitor leaves the city with a very positive image because of the work of architects. They ensured that every design is attractive and is well suited with its location. In addition, large and open spaces, big scales, and high speed routes makes the city unique and a comfortable place for anyone to spend precious time in. This has been achieved because the city responds to different changes in the architectural sector. Las Vegas is unique because of its light architecture. Its symbolic architecture and well designed gardens makes the city to look outstanding while compared with other cities. The building are well spaced and have ample parking for any traffic. Therefore, there are playing grounds and other basic elements that lack in other major city. Furthermore, every new building incorporates new design in the architectural sector. The author of the book states that the city is heroic and original because of its unique architecture which adds the sense of beauty. Las Vegas at night glitters at night. Lightened signs provide directions make the city even more beautiful at night. These are sources of lightening the whole strip. The Study of Urban Form in Italy Most significant contributions to the development of urban morphology as a discipline field in Italy are mainly found in research or either architects, urbanists, or urban designers. Italians have always been peculiar in that it’s important to acknowledge the link between tradition and innovation. The peculiarity is well seen in their design projects both in practical and in theoretical terms. Their typological approach is distinguished from other societies. This is through their classical concept of architecture as a tectonic system. The foundation of this approach can be traced back in early-nineteenth century. During this period cultural aspects were shared between all those who were contributing towards the growth of the field. However, there were different interpretations on what a decent urban is. There has been a common understanding on urban morphology which was characterized by a systematic, urban, reciprocal misunderstanding among those who believed in it. Architectural language has been unifying feature which played a significant role in transforming different urban phenomena. The signs were defined through trying to look for a direct correspondence between the formal processes. The modern interpretation of urban form focused on unique language rather than the previous historical interpretations. The Italians were also able to create a strong relationship between urban morphology and building morphology. In addition, they emphasized the importance of understanding the importance of indeterminacy as the key factor in understanding the never-ending process of growth of urban forms. This made it possible for them to evolve. Alien and Distant: Rem Koolhaas on Film in Lagos, Nigeria Lagos/Koolhaas is a film that aimed at explaining the architectural discovery in Nigeria. The tale is of confrontation of third world urban dysfunction, which is disconnected from normal civilization. Through the interviews, the film explains of a city that was little known but which has currently been in the public limelight. The film was not about the violent, extreme, and urban thrills. Instead, it tries to provide an exciting representation of how the informal markets have gained power over the years and how people in these areas are coping with alienation and blind eye from western nations. He tries to emphasize that planning of city is both relevant and irrelevant. While giving illustrations to different markets in Lagos, he states that despite lack of proper planning, the cities have been able to remain magnificent over the years. Although there is a notion and evidence supporting the fact that the urban geography was in response the patterns of violence, the findings are consistent with historical antecedents. In addition, it goes ahead to conduct a market-based analysis which bring out the reality on the ground. Moreover, according to the film, the possible future of Lagos is that of a typical city because there are rooms to improve the current infrastructure. Different camera angles and dimensions are able to show that there is a room for improvement in Lagos and other cities in Africa. This is an indication that architectural designs will still be required by the future generations. Borrowing Sound The research was exploring how sound is borrowed in Tokyo. This is through borrowing views from traditional Japanese and Chinese landscape. The Japanese author Shinohara tried to argue that taking into account the Japanese traditional towns and putting into perspective the modern New York streets would bring more advantages to the architectural sector. He argued that despite some streets in Japan being congested and lacking enough air due to filled streets, the designs are appealing and they continue to be appealing to the people. Therefore, even modern architects have something to learn from these areas which were built many decades ago. The Japanese landscape design, borrowing is a common aspect that has played a significant role in improving the current designs. This aspect has played a significant role in understanding the rich spectrum of various interactions between space and activities in cities such as Tokyo. This also makes it possible to borrow ideas of intervention when some changes are required during the designing process. Different cafes have now adopted both the traditional and modern designs in order to satisfy the current demand. The parking designs and gardens keep on changing to incorporate new architectural designs in the market. Borrowed ideas have become an important element in improving the outside and inside look of Tokyo buildings and streets. The chaotic streets in Japan are an indication that beauty in architectural designs can be achieved by blending modern and traditional designs. The Style of Choice Postmodern is the only movement which has been able to connect the architectural practice with practice of panic. It is the only concept that has been able to create new unconscious. Through it, architects have been able to achieve modernization. Just like the capitalism in political field, postmodernism is the dominating style that has links different facets of architecture. New developments in the media are playing a significant role in changing the architectural aspects in the world. Initial designs by architects went unnoticed. However, with the current building boom that has been experienced in the last decades, designs have become very important in maintaining a beauty of this world. The consequences of these efforts are clear outside and inside the buildings. The designs have been able to accommodate the tastes and preferences of the current generation by ensuring that they meet their expectations. The current influence of electronic media and the internet together with increasing population has put pressure on architects to come up with innovative designs that are able to differentiate one building with the other. The architectural sector has been integrated with the modern culture. Every change in the culture has an impact on the designs and projects being brought up. The curriculum that is used to train the architects has been revised to incorporate the changes. This has seen a major change in the thinking of the designers. Currently, they focus more on the future and also take into consideration the traditional aspects that defined the sector. Read More
