There are several activities, which constitute manufacturing, while construction is a process, which encompasses several divergent activities. Manufacturing has faced criticisms in terms of sustainability since it is among the leading causes of pollution and environmental degradation. Going green and sustainable development have been the buzzwords in the manufacturing industry, which, in most cases has been on-site manufacturing. There has been a growing trend globally in general, and Australia in particular, towards implementing Off-site Manufacture (OSM) due to the several advantages which it offers to all the stakeholders.

Off-site Manufacture (OSM) has introduced a paradigm shift, in the construction industry, due to the several benefits, which are bound to propel OSM towards greater adoption in the industry. The construction industry is among the leading consumers of energy, and a cause of environmental degradation as well as land pollution. The construction industry is responsible for a great percentage of pollution. The construction industry results in air pollution through several construction activities such as working with toxic materials, operating diesel engines, burning, demolition, and land clearing.

The high level of dust generated during construction is classified as PM10 - particulate matter less than 10 microns in diameter and can be carried for large distances. The industry is also responsible for pollution due to diesel particulate matter (DPM) which consists of silicates, soot, and sulfates emanating from diesel engine exhausts of vehicles and heavy equipment. Chemicals used in the industry from sources such as cleaners, paints, thinners, plastics, treated woods, glues, and oils are also responsible for air pollution.

The construction industry also causes noise pollution. The vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery used in construction sites result in noise, which pollutes the environment. The construction industry is also a cause of water pollution. Water Pollution in the industry results from numerous sources such as construction debris and dirt, solvents, cleaners, diesel, and oil as well as paint.
