The continuous increase of population in cities would have normally such outcome, either in the short or the long term. At the same time, the limitation of energy sources worldwide has promoted another trend: the alignment of architecture with the rules of sustainability. Indeed, the last decade, eco – architecture, as this trend is known, has rapidly expanded worldwide strongly affecting the social, economic and cultural framework of each country. The effects of eco-architecture on culture are discussed in this study. Emphasis is given on a particular aspect of eco-architecture: underground living. This is because underground homes have become popular, offering an effective alternative for those who are interested in promoting sustainability. It is proved that eco-architecture can interact with culture but under certain terms. Moreover, the relationship between eco-architecture and culture is not standardized; it can be strong or weak, depending on the level at which eco-architects are free to promote architectural projects which can highly affect the cultural characteristics of a particular region. 1. Overview 1.1 Research Objectives The objectives of this study could be described as follows: a) to identify the key characteristics of eco-architecture, b) to check whether eco-architecture is able to interact with culture and at which level; C) to identify the reasons for which people had initially chosen to live underground but also the reasons for which they decided to move to buildings above the ground; d) to compare the quality of underground homes, as compared to conventional homes; e) to check whether modern thinking can affect the views of people in regard to eco-architecture and living underground and f) to estimate, as possible, the expansion of underground homes, as a trend, in the future. 1.2 Value of the topic Living underground has been a common practice in the early years of human history. Still, the rapid development of technology and the changes in the structure and the principles of societies have led to the need for different forms of living. The expressions of architecture have changed throughout time and have formed a different approach to the ability to represent a specific culture or time frame. When looking at the architecture of Turkey, it is noted that alterations in styles have been made to architecture and the approach which is taken throughout time.
Cultural heritage is an essential component of any nations’ identity. In addition to being a national heritage, the cultural heritage is a wealth that belongs to the citizens as well as to the whole mankind. While in the past, cultural heritage management was a task that was confined to the archeological or preservation departments of any country, in the recent times, there is a need for increased cooperation between several different sectors, organizations and stakeholders for the management of the cultural heritage.
Through the research it has been the attempt to focus on the issue of sustainable housing. The paper gives some examples of Eco friendly constructions in United Kingdom. On the basis of this discussion the paper concludes with the view that the well-being of future generation should be taken into consideration by the construction industry.
Firstly, it needs to consider the basic needs of human like food, clothing and shelter and also other needs to ensure a comfortable life. Secondly, it requires to maintain consistency while using resources for technology and to ensure compatibility with the present and future environment (Williamson et al, 2003: 5).
An architect’s duty is to understand the dreams and desires of the client and accordingly give a three dimensional shape to those dreams. The happiness of an architect lies in anything from building a new kitchen to designing a new city. Norman Foster is a world renowned architect who is known for his whimsical characteristics.
High rise have been built and proliferated worldwide. It is therefore essential to understand the analogies between skyscrapers and urban landscape. It is equally important to analyze and differentiate horizontal urban ecological designs and vertical urban ecological designs.
