The Pony is a symbol of the fantasy of children and how they interact with animals at a tender age. The story shows that children at a young age face peer pressure and discrimination from their counterparts. Kij wants to point out that friendship is important at young age and children want to enjoy it. But many times, they are threatened by their peers which can force them to change themselves and this can bring about a negative effect on their life.
