The Rise of the Planet of Apes: Film - Movie Review Example

The movie illustrated that no matter how smart a chimp can get (in the character of Cesar), either by modifying or enhancing their genetic make up through the intervention of science, nature will always take over. Perhaps the gist of the film can be encapsulated with Caroline’s admonishment to Will that “some things are not meant to be changed” (The Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Cesar can be considered as an aberration of nature because he grew up in the company of human beings and was treated as such.

He was not exposed to the environment of the jungle where his mother grew up and was trained by Will to become “civilized”. In a way, Cesar grew up like a human being. He had his own room and was treated as a part of Will’s family. Cesar was a happy chimpanzee in the Rodman household until nature took over. The laboratory where Cesar gew up and the ALZ 112 drug that boosted his intelligence were only instruments in showing that no matter how a smart a chimpanzee could get and no matter how he is trained to become civilized, the chimp’s animal instinct will always come out because it is his nature.

This was emphasized several times in the movie “The Rise of the Planet of The Apes” in different angles. First, Cesar went out of control when he attacked Will’s neighbor that he almost killed him. . Being the closest primate to human beings, the movie also demonstrated that chimps can respond to “human civility” and “attachment”. This was craftily insinuated in the hearbreaking scenes in the movie where Will has to abandon Cesar in the “correctional facility” for chimpanzees.

Cesar pleaded Will for him to “come home” but Cesar cannot understand why he has to be “detained”. Cesar may have become very smart but he never came to a point to understand the norm of human beings that in every action, there will always be a consequence. In Cesar’s chimpanzee mind, he only protected Will’s father but he did not understand that in the world of human beings, violence is never tolerated. Cesar’s transition in the facility subtly demonstrated his dilemma of being a chimp that he is not quite used to or comfortable with.

This was highlighted in the heart crushing scene in the movie where Cesar drew several times the window of his room to have a semblance of home in his detention because he missed it terribly. All the while, the caretaker of the facility had been maltreating Cesar to impose on him that he is a chimp that added more drama to the film. Eventually, realization came to Cesar that he does not belong in the world of human beings. His confrontation with the then dominant chimp in the facility was not only to demonstrate Cear’s physical capability but also as a symbolic assertion to return to what he is, a chimpanzee.

He eventually subdued the dominant monkey and assumed leadership of the pack. Cesar’s assumption of leaderhip among the pack of chimpanzees demonstrates that nature will always take over. The
