Interpersonal Communication Essay Introduction ‘The Proposal is a romantic comedy film released on 2009 with the settingat Sitka, Alaska. Anne Fletcher is the films director with Peter Chiarelli being the writer. Ryan Reylonds and Sandra Bullock play the leading role in the film with Craig Nelson, Betty White, and Mary Steenburgen among others in the supporting role. Mandeville Films produced the movie and released it on 19th June 2009 through Touchstone Pictures in North America (Fletcher). Synopsis Margaret Tate, a Canadian woman, is a senior editor of one of the most New York publishing houses. Due to her character, she is well- respected professionally and loathed at equal measure. The loathing effect is expressed even by her staffs who call her a witch when she is not around. She is a person who would give all for career and has no time for friendship or relationships. Outside the office, Margaret Tate is a woman who lives in her life. She is lonely as she has no time and traits for friendship. Her executive assistant, Andrew Paxton, is an ambitious individual who has a dream of becoming an outstanding editor. His stay as Margarets executive assistant is not easy since he loathes her as any other staff in the office. Besides, he has served Margaret Tate for three- years with the primary intention being to see his dream come true. One day Margaret learns that she cannot serve her capacity as the senior editor anymore; not because of her incompetence but out of her work visa expiration. The company board chair feels that she cannot continue with her job since she is to be deported to Canada. As she still tries to take in the news, Andrew appearance saves her day. In her smartness, she thinks quickly and tells Bergen, the board chair, that she is engaged to Andrew, and they are getting married soon. She later convinces Andrew that she will promote him to the editors post if he agrees to the proposal. In addition, she guarantees Andrew that his manuscript that he gave her to read will be published if the deal goes through. Andrew being a man of big dreams sees the deal as an opportunity to his success and agrees to it. After all, Margaret had convinced him that letting her lose the job would mean he also was going to be jobless. Mr. Gilbertson, an United States of American immigration agent, suspects that the two are up to committing fraud. He calls them for questioning and gives them time after which they will be asked questions differently, of which, failure to match will lead to heavy punishments. The couple traveled to Alaska to meet Andrews parents, a journey in which Andrew feels to be the one in control. During the stay, the past seems to haunt Andrew as his father fails to understand why he is not interested in inheriting the family business. The close and constant interaction between Margaret and Andrew make the two realize that they love each other. Margaret cannot stand Gertrude, former Andrews girlfriend. The love makes her come clear about the lie on the wedding day, and Andrew decided not to let go. As Margaret travels back to Alaska, ready for deportation, Andrew follows him and confesses his love. The two gets back in engagement plan, but this time being real. They took the questions as per Mr. Gilbertson order, and that makes the end of the film (Fletcher). Relationship I will be discussing the romantic relationship shared between Margaret Tate and Andrew Paxton. In explanation, I will be analyzing the details of how the business deal between them developed to be a love affair. The relationship stages found the couple is initiating, intensifying, experimenting, bonding and integrating (Fletcher). Initiating Stage It is the first stage of relationship development in which one expresses his or her interest in the other person. According to the film, "The Proposal", Margaret seems to be planning to initiate the relationship as she gets into one on one communication with Gertrude, Andrews ex-girlfriend. The encounter takes place in an ‘embarrassing’ party that Margaret was taken to by Andrew’s mother and grandmother. Since the relationship was first based on lies, the incident in which the two bump on each naked seems to the initiating point. Though accidental, Andrew uses the scene to start a genuine interaction with Margaret. On the other hand, Margaret shows concern and wants to know more about the deplorable relationship between Andrew and his father. She opens up and tells Andrew about her life with most of them being personal (Fletcher). Experimenting Stage It is the second stage of relationship development and is characterized by identifying the shared traits among the couple. In the film "The Proposal", Andrew initiates a "small talk" during the second scene in which we are shown them sharing the same room. It is at this point that Margaret decides to open up to Andrew about her life that has been sought of secretive. Andrew shows that he is so much interested in the intimate part of her life that makes Margaret question. Andrew ends up appreciating her beauty and shows it funnily through the song "It takes two to make a thing go right." (Fletcher) Intensifying Stage It is the third stage of relationship development and entails development of a relationship that mutually addresses the couple’s needs. In "The Proposal", the intensifying stage is shown when Andrews mother and father propose for them to get married the following day. It is the first time Margaret uses the word "we" sincerely which is accompanied by a romantic rubbing on Andrew (Fletcher). Integrating Stage It is the fourth stage of relationship development that features the couple coming forward as an entity. About "The Proposal", Margaret and Andrew relationship though false had been recognized by the public including the family members. Andrew is refusing the offer to let Margaret go thus making his father realize that their love is real even though he was not ready to accept it. Andrew’s grandmother faking a heart attack just for him to get to Margaret showed that she recognized their love (Fletcher). Bonding Stage Bonding is the fifth stage of the relationship development and entails engaging in public rituals. In “The Proposal”, Andrew and Margaret demonstrates this stage by deciding to take their romantic life in public. He ends up proposing for a real marriage and kissing in the office in front of their colleagues (Fletcher). In conclusion, "The Proposal" film shows that an effective and competent communication enables one to understand each other. Such communication can make a positive relationship out of nothing. To ensure that the relationship is maintained, the two parties should be ready to open up and listen to one another.
