Analysis and review of Lucy the movie Introduction Lucy is a English-language French science fiction action film that was written and directed by Luc Besson. The film was then produced by his wife Virginie Silla for his company Europacorp. The shoting of the film was done in several cities such as Taipei, Paris and New York City. The main characters are Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Amr Waked and Choi Min-sik. Johansson who is the main character in the film demonstrates a woman who gains psychokinetic abilities from a nootropic drug being absorbed into her bloodstream. Its first release was on July 25, 2014, and it expanded to become a box office success grossing over $458 million against a budget of $40 million thus becoming an instant success. The film gained positive as well as polarized critical reviews with a lot of praise given to Johansson for her outstanding performance, entertaining or intriguing themes and visuals. It received criticism for having a nonsensical plot, especially its focus on the ten percent of brain myth and resulting abilities. As the main character, Lucy stands out to be the sole protagonist who is surrounded by several antagonists who are after her life due to the drugs. Plot analysis and summary The film depicts Lucy who is a 25-year old America women pursuing her studies in Taipei. Her boyfriend soon tricks her into working as a drug mule. Her first mission is to deliver a briefcase to Mr. Jang that has a highly valuable drug. Her boyfriend gets killed and a bag of drugs is forcibly sewn into her abdomen for transportation to Europe. One of the captors accidently kicks her abdomen thus releasing large amount of drugs into her systems. As a result, she acquires rapidly enhanced physical and mental capabilities, such as telepathy, telekinesis, mental time travel, and she can choose not to feel pain or other discomforts, in addition to other abilities. She kills off her captors and manages to get away. She then travels moves to the nearest hospital to have the bag removed from her abdomen and the doctor informs her of her new abilities due to the effects of the drugs. Upon knowing her unique abilities, Lucy returns to Mr. Jangs hotel, kills his bodyguards, assaults Mr. Jang, and telepathically extracts the locations of all three drug mules from his brain. At her apartment, she engages in a series of research in order to know the solution for her condition. She comes across Professor Samuel Norman who gives her the detailed information about her condition. Then she moves to Paris where she seeks help from Captain Pierrer Del Rio to assist her in locating the lost bags of drugs. Soon her body begins to disintegrate after consuming champagne and her total disintegration can only be stopped by consuming more of the drug. Her powers continue to increase making her able to telepathically incapacitate armed police and members from the Korean drug gang. With the help of Del Rio, Lucy recovers the drug and hurries to meet Professor Norman, with whom she agrees to share everything she now knows, after he points out that the main point of life is to pass on knowledge. Jang and the mob also want the drug and a gunfight ensues with the French police. She receives an injection of the drug from the professor and her body registers a lot of changes as her abilities are transformed into a supermodel computer. Mr. Jang He shoots, but in an instant before the bullet strikes, Lucy attains 100% of her cerebral capacity and disappears within the spacetime continuum, where she explains that everything is connected and existence is only proven through time. Del Rio then enters and fatally shoots Mr. Jang. Professor Norman takes a black, monolithic flash drive offered by the advanced supercomputer created by Lucys body before the machine disintegrates to dust. In-depth analysis and review The movie stands out from the rest due the fact that it pays deft while at the same time knowing homage to many of Hollywood’s science fiction movies. The producer of the movie has succeeded in locating mankind’s precarious position within the greater cosmic order as well as anticipation of the literally mind-blowing coming phase in the evolution of man. The main character’s gradual rise to omnipotence and omniscience is a depiction of what is to be expected in the developmental process of human thinking. The movie expresses the theme of transcendence which is evident when Lucy uploads herself into every computer and television set in the vicinity. The movie is not just about fiction but it also portrays some elements in the real world such as drug trafficking which has rose to become a global challenge. The theme of violence that emerges in several scenes in the movie tends to limit its audience as it does not encourage children to view it. There are several instances where people are shot with a lot of blood being spilt all over the places. Some brief injury wounds are seen in the move when a man is shot in the head and the audience are shown the bloody wound. The language used in the movie can be described as strong and thus not suitable for viewers below the standard age limit. The pace of the movie increases and remains intense from the instance Lucy suffers a beating that ruptures the drugs in her stomach and they get released into her bloodstream. This seem to change the mood of the movie as all the characters are now engaged in a quick rush in order to salvage what they have as well as their lives. The roles of other characters in the movie becomes more evident when the drug raptures in Lucy’s stomach we get to meet the fat-cat drug dealer who is out to control the life of Lucy, the brilliant and deep voiced scientist who becomes a savior to Lucy due to his prowess in the field of medicine and the handsome nice cop who offers assistance to Lucy during her climactic mission to acquire more of the experimental hormone.
