Fashion Photography and its negative affects on young womens self image and esteem The world of fashion photography has opened up a number of perspectives for the people. This has been documented in the wake of immense aspirations attached with the subject. For the sake of young women, it has been a savior of sorts. This paper will touch upon the various aspects which discuss fashion photography and how it changes the self image and esteem issues. Fashion photography for the sake of young women has come out as a perfect solution to make sure that they get aspired values from different celebrities and famous individuals to focus such similar domains upon their own selves. The manner in which fashion photography has begun to distract the attention of the young women from different priorities in their lives leaves a very bad taste in the mouth, especially when it is being debated upon. They often emphasize more on what the celebrities are doing and what kind of new photographs are coming out in the open for them. They are reliant on fashion for looking after their own requirements, which are insignificant if seen properly (Bianchi, 2007). They perceive true beauty to be hidden within fashion photography which is simply untrue. They would rather emphasize on how they could derive value from fashion than looking at the reality aspects. The negative effects of fashion photography are important to understand here. This is because the young women start believing that fashion photography is for real and that they must follow the celebrities and stars into becoming somewhat similar. They are of the view that the world of media and fashion is filled with glamour which is not anywhere close to reality. This element essentially makes them feel that they must do something collectively to welcome what is being shown to them through the different media outlets and domains (Potts, 2007). As far as their self image and self esteem issues are concerned, these young women need to understand where they are going wrong (Kessler, 2007). Since self image is something that shapes up one’s own thinking in a number of different ways, the dire requirement is to find out whether or not they are thinking of their own selves in a corrective fashion. If their self image portrays them in a negative way, then there is reason enough to believe that the elders must tell them where they are going wrong and what they ought to do to make the right change (Bunge, 2007). Self image is also important because if a young woman thinks of her own self in a positive way, it will get reflected within her personality over a period of time. If she thinks low about herself, then this will be apparent through her actions, work tasks and attitudes that she offers to different people around her. Self image must not be interpreted as being wrong at any given time. What is indeed mistaken is the thinking level of the young women who believe that their self image has hurt them and they need to do something different. Similarly, self esteem is something that must be understood within the same light (Watson, 2008). This is because self esteem allows a woman to find out the positives that surround her. If she does not believe that she has achieved self esteem yet, there is reason behind such an ideology. Much work therefore needs to be done within her own personality so that she can achieve a level where her self esteem is higher (Parveen, 2012). Now how self image and self esteem come about in the wake of fashion photography that the young women indulge in is something that needs to be understood properly. Since self image and self esteem aspirations get derived from what is on television, print and other forms of media, there is all the more reason that these young women, though not intelligent due to their tender age, fall for such nuances. They believe it is a good thing to remain in the loop with what the celebrities are doing and how new trends and fads are coming in and going out of the picture on a regular basis (Aagerup, 2011). This is also one of the reasons why many young women want to have a fashion portfolio of their own so that whenever they feel like competing with their peers and colleagues, they are always one step ahead of the rivalry. Hence these celebrities and famous individuals are playing with the minds of the young women because fashion photography makes them and the other celebrities look glamorous. What they keep forgetting is the fact that Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Freehand are good tools to make sure that reality gets hidden and artificial effects make a person more prominent than she actually is in her real life. These software are thus bringing about a great deal of harm to the young minds because they bring up fake beauty realms without even thinking of the intentions of specific campaigns, brands and sometimes even fashion personalities themselves (Baudot, 2006). Therefore, the negative effects need to be monitored by the elders and the society in essence so that fashion photography remains just photography at the end of the day. It must not take the front seat at all and the young women ought to regard it in the same light. The negativities that come attached with the fashion photography regimes must be tackled in an amicable manner so that the young women know that they cannot go over the board. They have to stick to priorities in their lives and should not shy away from the performance towards their relevant work tasks. These negative effects will hamper the smooth basis of the young women so it would be a good time to provide counseling to them (Harrow, 2005). In the end it would be fair to state that the fashion photographers should also understand that they must avoid propagation of beauty in such a manner that it makes the young women go haywire. The negativities that come along with it should always be avoided as it is much needed by the people who understand fashion and the related norms of fashion photography (Smith, 2009).
