Before Sunset Film Analysis - Movie Review Example

BEFORE SUNSET: a Film Analysis Before Sunset is the sequel to the movie Before Sunrise. The film illustrates events that transpired nine years afterJesse and Celine first met each other in Vienna. This film analysis focuses on the dialogues used by the main characters which are considerably the main element of the film. It is very noticeable that there were only minimal actions in the film and more on conversations. The movie lines were generally entertaining. There were a number of funny dialogues particularly every time they mocked each other.

A lot of them depicted the great and fond memories they had made together nine years back. The lines were simple yet profound and intellectual. The words were easy to understand yet the exchange of conversations was thought-provoking. It seemingly left the audience thinking and arriving at various realizations. The conversations of the main characters were definitely free-flowing. They were very natural and sincere. Moreover, the movie lines reflected a lot of the characters’ innermost thoughts and feelings, especially because the leading characters had intimate moments in the past.

Most of their dialogues were inspired by the short yet unforgettable memories they had together. The book Jesse had authored in the movie revealed his subconscious mind – his feelings toward Celine, his perspective on the kind of relationship they once had, his appreciation of Vienna and Paris, his aspirations, and the things that could have been. The beginning of the movie showed Jesse being interviewed by the press. It can be surmised that the dialogues here were reflective of Jesse’s own experiences and emotions.

There were a number of scenes in the film that depicted how they had cherished their memories through the years and how much they had valued each other despite the test of time and distance. An example was the scene where Celine asked Jesse if he went to Vienna on that day when they were supposed to meet. It gave them the chance to resolve some issues which they had not talked about anymore after they parted ways. The conversation Jesse and Celine had when they were in the taxi gave Celine the chance to finally burst out her sentiments toward love and relationships, and how her disposition had changed when her romance with Jesse ended.

The way she talked about her present relationship with a photojournalist illustrated her great need for freedom and her reticence in giving her all in a relationship. Their scenes of catching up with each other and making up for the lost time were amusing and touching as well. Their dialogues reflected some sense of regret and acceptance at the same time. They may had something special between them nine years back yet they were able to accept that a lot of things had already changed and were never meant to be.

Before Sunset is a film that does not have a conclusive ending. It leaves the audience wondering what else could have happened next. It ended in the scene where Jesse and Celine were having a conversation at the latter’s place. She was playing the guitar and singing for him when he was supposed to catch a flight. The film does not really have much highlights or spectacular scenes but focuses rather on conveying intellectual and insightful dialogues that reflect much of the main characters’ personae.

Unlike other movies, the great features of the film could not be based upon special effects or costumes. It was all about the quality of the script. It requires a great deal of attentiveness and deep comprehension in order to have a good appreciation of the film. The movie was generally fine, though it could be boring for someone who prefers a more dynamic style. The film was shot in Paris, France which is one of the most famous cities in the world and the largest city in France. It is characterized by a large population and very busy streets.

It is well-known for being the world’s fashion and art capital. Paris’ city structure was a fusion of various earlier architectural styles and has evolved from being a walled city. The rebuilding of walls through the ages had turned the place into a spiralling city. This city was established during the Medieval Period. Influence of Roman architecture is still evident there today, such as the Rue Saint-Jacques, the main Roman road. During the 12th century, the city adopted the Gothic style characterized by round arches, cross vaults, and flying buttresses.

During the Renaissance era, Paris bloomed with new buildings. This style introduced the concept of human proportion. This is also the period when new neighbourhoods were developed. Elegant neighbourhoods were built in the Latin Quarter, the Faubourg Saint-Germain, and the Quartier du Palais-Royal by Louis Le Barbier. These neighbourhoods are characterized by marvelous private urban hotels (Pasold). In the 17th century, Paris began to adopt Baroque style marked by huge floor plans, massive figures of humans, illusion of distance, symmetrical wings, strong window treatments, and gigantic buildings (Pasold).

Also, in the same century, Rococo style introduced itself to Paris through its nature-inspired and refined curves. Certain areas of architecture had also been enhanced such as chimneys, sanitation, and privacy of rooms. The residential life in the city that we observe in the present is primarily inspired by Rococo style. During the 80s, former President Mitterrand renewed and diversified Paris. His attempt to develop it into a contemporary architectural city had materialized. It is no wonder that Paris is indeed a historical and well-developed city that makes it a popular destination.
