Extract of sample "Smartphone Technology"

The paper "Smartphone Technology" is a worthy example of a term paper on technology.  In 1878, Alexander Graham becomes the first person to make a phone call. His device was completely dissimilar to what we today refer to as phones. All through the years, the telephone has been facing a steady and high rate of development. Today the once cherished and respected telephones are becoming obsolete with each arrival of cellular technology. In the year 1993, IBM and BellSouth launched the first smartphone and made it available to the public, this phone looked different from today’s smartphones but it had the basics of a smartphone and served as a template for future development.

It had a touch screen and could be used in sending of mails and receiving faxes. Going by the definition that a smartphone should go beyond the abilities to only make calls and receive messages, but should be having some additional distinctive features like the GPS together with other application that are not found in the other types of cellphones. They also have the ability to edit documents, internet access and ability to read and decode information such as the quick response code (QR). Some smartphone is able to perform human-like duties like talking to the operator, answering the question, turning off lights and even opening and closing of doors.

The word smartphone was first used by Ericson Company when it released the GS88 in 1997, Nokia, their longtime enemy launched Nokia 9000 the following year. This was the first Nokia phone to utilize a colored screen, which districted it from other Nokia Models. In 2001, Symbian OS was launched and it became the world most famous operating system. Ericson R380 became the first phone to give its users the first experience of this OS, but not for long before android brought a stiff completion. The years that followed were marked by the invention of another operating system including Palm OS, Windows CE, and Blackberry OS to fill the market space.

Palm OS was the giant in the market with its Kyocera 6035 and the new PalmOS-based Treo. This increasing invention presented consumers with the freedom of choice, to choose which OS fits your needs or fascinates you with some IT professional preferring nothing less than a Blackberry. Windows sent two different OS’s, Window Mobile and Windows CE, into the market and begun competing against itself. Unluckily, these products never reached the intended heights. Through the years from 2002 to 2007, development in smartphone became nearly dead with only the devices changing but the OS remaining constant only for the development to be reawakened by Apple Inc.

when it introduced the iPhone OS, an android made a surprise appearance around the same time, but after iPhone was operational. Android gained fame when Google began bucking it leading to a number of contracts with phone manufacturing companies including Motorola, LG, and Samsung. Apple and Google-owned OS’s share many common features. Microsoft made a surprise comeback into the market by inventing the worlds latest OS, Windows Phone. This OS has a completely different appearance from another version of operating systems.

The Nokia-Microsoft collaboration brought this new experience to the consumer when it launched the Lumia 800. A handset that is promising stiff competition to the earlier operating systems. Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android have so long been dominating the market, windows phone is also set to reach their standards. Smartphone operationFor a smartphone to operate, it needs an OS, this depends on the model of the phone, the only difference between a smartphone and regular computers is that it needs services from the mobile network providers to send and receive data.

As opposed to the computers, these phones use micro-browsers (much smaller touch screen) for navigation, which is designed for small portable devices. Users can also access keyboard function. Just like the regular phones, they use digital radio wave technology to connect to the servers, this device converts data into binary units and compresses them for transmission. It uses frequency-keying technology to assign each signal a dedicated binary number and sends the signal to the transmission tower.

Smartphone use a number of ways to connect the user with the whole world, a number of them use 3G (third-generation) wireless network, and this refers to all the technologies that transmit data faster than the 2g networks of the 19990s. The most modern type of connection is 4G, which is faster than 3G. Some of the smartphones allow one to turn the device into a Wi-Fi provider or hotspot to allow others to access the internet; however, the data usage is charged on a provider. The devices are equipped with memory units to store information, an internal memory complemented by a flash drive.

The memory device uses an electron to create binary series, which represent particular data, the series can be recalled and manipulated in the device. Smartphones need batteries in order to operate; in all cases, the batteries are rechargeable. During operation, the electrons move from negative to positive and recharging process brings takes them back to the negative terminal. This continues until the battery potential is depleted. The smartphone has gained the highest fame in the whole world than any other device ever invented.

Its use cuts across both the old and the young. It is projected that their use will make the world more of a global village and facilitate information flow. However, people believe that it will make telephones and some version of cellphones obsolete.
