Extract of sample "The Social Impact of Technology on the Culture"

The social impact of technology on our culture comes with both positive and negative implications. Inventors of various forms of technologies have always looked to advancing their creations and inventions. A typical example that gives evidence to this is the stages that the computer has gone through from mainframe computers to its current portable forms such as tablets. As changes in technologies take place, they come with changes in social impacts, some of which are positive and others, negative.

One of the positive impacts that advances in technology has on our culture is that it has made the learning of culture very easy. Today, on the wings of the technology and other technological tools, one does not have to be physically present at a place to learn about a preferred culture. This is a positive development that comes to make culture transcending. There is also the benefit where technology has bridged physical boundaries that existed between people. Today, family, friends and loved ones are able to stay in touch wherever they are.

This has enhanced communication and solved most problems that lack of communication could bring to relationships. A typical example of such problems includes divorce. There is also a negative side to the impact that technological advancement has on our culture. For example, the issue of blind copying of other people’s culture is an issue that is disintegrating the core cultural heritage that people used to have. It can therefore be said that the pace of advancement has led to a cultural disconnect.

Lastly, the pace of technological advancement has made people excessively vulnerable to social threats such as scams and fraud. This has been noted to be very common among new users of technological platforms such as social media networks (MacKenzie and Wajcman, 1999). This has therefore made our society and culture highly volatile one.ReferencesBaase S. (2008). A Gift of Fire: Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues for Computing and the Internet.
