Computing: user requirement specification - Assignment Example

Summary
A prototype is the first or original example of something that has been or will be copied or developed. It is a model or preliminary version. Virtually all innovative designs emerge in the interplay between two dueling representations: the wish list of specifications that describe and define the new ideas, and the prototypes that attempt to embody them…

While traditional methods of prototyping take a long time to make, a low fidelity prototype takes a lesser time comparatively. It is easy to evaluate and iterate the design. Moreover, the prototype is easy to understand and can be modified to meet user requirements without much expenditure. A low fidelity prototype of the design that has been suggested is shown in the next page. The design primarily has an interface which is secure, as it can be used only by authorized users having unique ID and a password.

Lecturers and the administrator can be provided with such log-in IDs and passwords while course leaders do not require it. Basically, each student will be registered once while entering the university at the main entrance by fingerprint scanning. This is done so that only authorized people enter the university. There will be a second time of registering the students when they enter their respective classes. This can be done using the code checker on the student's ID card with OCR or Optical Character Recognition.

When this is done, the attendance is automatically registered into the attendance manager system shown below. When the lecturer for the p. Since, the attendance registration using OCR has been performed already, the lecturer only manually verifies the attendance. After the verification is over, he/she can then save the attendance sheet. Provision can also be provided to add, edit or reset a column, row or an individual square in the sheet. In the prototype suggested, these buttons are provided on the left side.

On the top section, the following buttons can be provided;i) History- allows the user to view attendance of a particular day or week in the past.ii) View- allows the user to switch between attendance, grades and statistics.iii) Sort by- allows the users to sort the names based on first names, last names, grades or attendance for the last one week.iv) Print- allows the user to print the attendance sheet.v) Options- this can be provided to customize the display settings and set user preferences.vi) Help- this can be provided to support and guide the user on using the system.vii) Search- this can help the user to view attendance of any particular student, or during a particular activity.

The attendance manager system can be programmed to highlight in red color, the student who has had an unexplained absence during the past week. Further, frequent latecomers and poor performers in tests can also be highlighted in different colors, so that the staff may take note of it. This can be followed up by an email, to the respective students and their parents or guardians, generated automatically by the system. It is worth mentioning here that even though users can view the attendance information of different times and classes, they are allowed to make changes only in the area into which they log-in.

In this way, the system is secure, yet gives the
