Download file to see previous pages The Gender Pay Gap is demonstrated by the fact that it is a consistent and widely observed phenomenon that women earn less than men (Becker, 1957/1985; Bergmann, 1974). Aside from this, there has been sufficient evidence that this form of wage discrimination exists in many cases for no other objective reason other than gender. This is proven by many examples of employers giving higher wages to men with the same position or qualifications as women.

Many academic and workplace studies have attempted to explain why this gap exists because such forms of discriminatory wage practices are a form of inefficient allocation of economic resources (Wharton, 2006; Blau & Kahn, 1992).

Since wages reflect the economic value of work and the appreciation of a worker’s effort and contribution in the workplace, wage differentials that are based on factors not related in any way to personal effort or qualification but on gender alone are a reflection of how society, as reflected by the work environment, gauges the economic value of gender differences.

Pay gaps are acceptable between two people of different qualifications, e.g., a new university graduate and a supervisor with a year or two of experience, or of different work responsibilities, e.g., a filing clerk and a division manager. Examples of a gender pay gap is a male filing clerk who receives more than the female division manager, or a young male college graduate who receives less than a female with the same job because of gender. This illustrates the issue that continues to exist in different ways even in America.  

Treating women as inferior to men by giving them lower wages just because they are women is a form of discrimination that – despite advances in human rights and a greater appreciation for the equality in dignity, stature, and rights among all humans regardless of gender – reflects a weakness in a society that claims to protect and guarantee the rights of all. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
