Download file to see previous pages... I was born in Beijing, China in a middle class family. I was raised in a typical Chinese cultural setting where people have significant emphasis on male child. My parents moved to United States of America soon after my birth. Hence I grew up under the supervision of my grandparents who were then professional doctors. Later at the age of 14 I also moved to USA where my parents had already established business after much efforts and sacrifices. Since then onwards I am living in USA with my parents whereas my grandparents still live in China as retired doctors. In my family setup education, skills, efforts and abilities were much focused and emphasized. This was primarily due to the traditional Chinese culture where new born babies are considered an investment to the economic development. Moreover, having few children also compelled parents in China to educate their offspring in the best possible way. Thus my childhood was spent in comprehending complex ideas about life, science and social subjects.
The Chinese culture is renowned for its strong ethical values and the sense of hard work (Jenkins). The overwhelming cultural excellence and discipline gave me a very significant self identity. This not only helped me in maintaining stronger values in USA as compared to my peers rather it also facilitated me in the overall process of self awareness and self actualization.
My cultural identity is also influenced by the one-child policy implemented in China in 1979. This was the primary reason due to which Chinese parents were compelled to have one healthy male child in order to secure the blood line of their families (Jenkins). However, this policy also resulted in severe reduction of female babies. Subsequently I was raised in a society where apparently there was no distinction between male and female but on the other side female babies were not welcomed by the extended societal norms.
