Sociological Blog: Glorification of Crime Through the viewing of the various provocative clips as a person of the world, I realized that not just the US citizens but majority of cultures in the world glorify crime. Led by Hollywood, the movie industries have come to present some social crimes as some sorts of social activism. The mass media has a lot of influence and commands strong public opinion machinery capable of influencing key political, economic and socio-cultural sectors of the world.

This is especially true considering the amount of Americans who watch Hollywood movies especially teenagers who are as a very vulnerable age in life where they can be swayed. Just to note, some movies such as “gangs of New York,” “The Godfather “and “No country for old men” among other blockbuster Hollywood movies, they portray villains as social heroes. Society has come to expect a form of expected level of deviant criminal behavior amongst itself as long as the ultimate good is in the best interest of the people.

This is as to agree to the concept that “the end justifies the means.” This is the Machiavellian way of argument as advocated in his book The Prince. People have come to wrongly accept a certain amount of social deviant behavior, criminal practices because over a long period of time, the social deviants have come to be associated with celebrity status. This has been the result of the portrayal that the media has portrayed them giving them celebrity status (Ballantine and Spade 167). For example, criminals such as the infamous Carlos “the Jackal” up to date is seen by most teenagers and even adults as a celebrity due to his media portrayal.

Many movies have hence negatively impacted on the social policies and laws and in my opinion; I strongly disagree with such a glorification of crime. Work CitedBallantine, Jeanne H and Joan Z Spade. Schools and Society: A Sociological Approach to Education. New York, NY: Pine Forge Press, 2010. Print.
