Rigging the Game: Inequality and Society Equality is the act of treating everybody in society with maximum respect, consideration and being aware of the consequences that our behavior can have on society. Therefore, it encourages elimination of negative stereotypes and attitudes towards certain people, race or communities. Inequality is the unfair treatment of certain group of people or individuals in society. Just like age, gender is among the universal dimensions on which differences in status are based.

Gender is not a biological concept but rather a social construct specifying the culturally and socially prescribed roles that women and men are to follow in society. Gender is the costume in which women and men dance their unequal dance. For along time, men have subordinated women. As evident in the rigged game, women have been subordinated because they have been portrayed as weaker sex in society. Reasons for gender inequality in American society can be attributed to deepening division in the roles assigned to females and males in all spheres of life in society, particularly in political, economic and educational spheres.

In most cases, women are not active as men in decision making processes and political activities. In reference to the book, the rigged game, this the point that has been neglected since men tender to think that political activities and decision making processes are only inclined to them and not women. This attributable to present patterns within the capitalists’ economic structure within the American society which shows that there exist economic predestination in the USA. Further, gender inequality and women development has been subject of heated debated, but the matter has been ignored to a large extend.

The issue of gender and development tries to seek comprehension of the roles, resources and responsibilities of men and women within specific context, thus, evaluating the environmental, social and economic factors which affect their decision making capacity and roles in society. Gender discrimination has led to structural deprivation of the life of women. It has been recognized that issues such as poverty and illiteracy are experienced more by women than men. Females face tribulations to access good education which hinder their ability to succeed.

This is mainly stressed on the council on social work education which made changes in the education sector but it has been deemphasized. The adoption of population at risk has got little attention. Initially, the population at risk strategy placed at a lot of emphasis on group rather than the environment in which the group is found or exists. For instance, the social work faculty in USA has put little emphasis on poverty level among women due to history of discrimination of women. In addition, women are faced with wide range of differences and discrepancies compared to what men get.

The reasons for this invisible inequality in gender are attributed to glass ceiling effect. In this regard, this is the unreachable and unseen barrier that that keeps chances of women to succeed.
