Hypocrisy in Americas Daily Life - Assignment Example

America is hypocriticalAmerica is hypocritical. It pretends to be virtuous when in fact it is not. It trumpets and imposes its idea of righteousness on others but has trouble practicing it. It uses double standard in passing judgment whereby it is harsh on its judgment over others but lenient on itself. Indeed America is hypocritical for it likes to pretend for something it is not. It is not difficult to find hypocrisy in America’s daily life. All one has to do is to listen to public speeches made by government officials, captains of industry, civic leaders, or anybody who is in the position of influence and for sure we would hear lofty and immaculate speeches.

They are wonderful thoughts and bright ideas but they are just that, wonderful thoughts because they are rarely practiced. This is not only exclusive to public figures but is in fact more pervasive with ordinary Americans. Many like to exhort that they are this and that and that they are good and nice people. But give them the opportunity to do horrible things and they will act like a loose cannon forgetting that just moments ago they were exhorting righteousness. They will cheat, lie, backstab, hurt if they can get away with it and will only be virtuous when somebody is looking.

Just look at the recent news about the Black Friday sale at Macy, they were killing each other just to get ahead in a sale and there are even stabbing incidences in parking lots. Almost yearly, the violence that comes with the sale is almost a ritual. And this people are the regular Americans who in their everyday lives exhort ideal citizenship and good values. America’s hypocritical attitude can also be said to have caused the recent financial crisis that it took us years to recover that until now, we are yet to fully recover.

One might say that the financial crisis started with the housing bubble but again, the housing bubble happened because of American hypocritical attitude about spending and finances. The housing bubble happened because too many hypocritical Americans made loans that they cannot afford to pay just to look good and to appear that they are living a good life. They are so many that it caused the housing industry to collapse and caused a ripple effect to other industries until it affected the entire economy of America and the world.

All of these happened because America is hypocritical about its finances. It is not certain what caused this pervasive hypocrisy in American society. Probably it is a contagious epidemic that has already almost everybody because hypocrisy exists in almost every aspect of American society that it can already be categorized as hypocritical. Perhaps this hypocrisy among Americans is just a reflection of its collective insecurity to trample or stab others on the back just to look good. This is very pervasive in high school and still exists among adults except that they became more sophisticated in hiding it.

Probably there is just too much pressure among Americans to look good because media and society has been bombarding us to be good, to be virtuous and upright when in fact we are just humans just like everyone else in the world who could be goods as well as bad. Hypocrisy is just more pronounced in America because we have not come to terms with the idea that there will be times that we will have shortcoming because we are just human beings. Such, we always wanted to look good and virtuous even if it is not in our nature so America became hypocritical as a society.
