Introduction The Wicker Man is a mystery horror film produced in 1973 by Robin Hardy whereas The Lego is an American-Australian-Danish animated comedy produced by Phjil Lord. This paper examines how the society is brainwashed In the Lego Movie by President Evil and the Wicker Man by Lord Summersile How Society Is Being Brainwashed, In the Lego Movie by President Evil The society is being brainwashed in the Lego movie by the use of an intelligent symbol of freedom and creativity of the various characters and techniques used in the production of the movie. In the movie, the actions undertaken by the figurines, characters in the movie do not reflect the free will towards the course they championing towards. They cause of fighting is to promote dictatorship while at the same time fighting for freedom too. What is puzzling in this movie is that they viciously fight against a tube of glue that to their limits their freedom of movement. The tube glue which symbolizes they are fighting against is a mechanical substance which is controlled and dictated by others. In other words, they are fighting to be machines which supposedly will be used by others in accomplishing their goals. However , the figurine society have been deceived to believe that they are fighting for freedom as they themselves are mechanical objects and needs the threat (tube glue) they are fighting against to give them a sense of meaning or direction. The threat which is the tube glue is normally used in joining various joints in an object; therefore, by fighting against it, they are promoting their mechanization as without the glue they are permanently joined in one place. In the movie, president evil brainwash the society into believing that they are living in a police state society where justice comes first hand before anything. However, as provided below, president evil has actually brainwashed the society. The most evil character in the movie is referred to as Octan and he positions himself as the chief executive officer of the “Octan corporation and the world. President evil deceives the society into believing that (Lord). President evil as the name suggest is an evil man who uses all forms of techniques to achieve his goals by profiting from his workers and citizens to continue expanding his empire. To prevent the citizens from knowing his secrets, he involves the aspect of utopia where he invents a “taco Tuesday”. The ploy behind this act is to show the public his generosity by giving out a free taco which is tasty snacks and an opportunity to socialize with him. The actual truth is that these tacos come with a price as the society later discovers that the true definition of tacos is TAKOS an abbreviation for tentacle, arm, Kragle, outside sprayer. For a moment, the public believes that everything is running on normal, thus supporting activities being conducted by president evil. Through this, we see that the society is tightening the grip president evil holds over their freedom as he uses the tacos to limit their freedom of movement, hence freedom of the will (Lord). TAKOS in the real world can be used to mean policies. President evil deceives the society into accepting the new policies which he later uses to control all major sectors of the government. Citizens obliviously abide by the instructions which to their surprise discover that it has increased the costs of living with them. An example is that they find themselves buying overpriced products, supporting media, which does not gain or point out to the injustices being committed in the society and limiting the freedom in moving using the gerbil wheel which signifies their legs. This is the perfect scenario of president evil using his big business to rule his society by using his wealth and influences to infiltrate the government in a manner that he is the only one who benefits from anything positive that comes along the society’s way. In my opinion the society in which president lives is a society which does not give room for free will as president evil is incorporating a system of computational system through his Octan corporation and tacos to control and manipulate citizens into doing his own will. How Society Is Being Brainwashed, In the Wicker Man by Lord Summersile The society is being brainwashed by Lord Summersile as he pretends to be an open minded individual in the society. Howie, who is a police officer and a dedicated Christian is deceived into accepting the summon of Lord Summerisle believing that it is related with the his purpose of visit into town, but ends up being sacrificed to the gods of the island. Secondly, Lord Summerisle also deceives the religious beliefs of the society as they he is a force of the pagan practice way of life. Being a religious leader, he should emphasis on the need of preserving life, yet he is the one destroying life on the island. Instead of directing the society towards a right course, he has formed a cult which practices, sexual debauchery, fertility rites and sacrifices. This shows how wayward his thinking goes, because most societies in twenty first century, despite religious or political beliefs are championing for a better future and the destruction of life does not constitute in any of the goals championed for by the twenty first century societies (Hardy). Thirdly, Summerisle who admits that the pagan-culture was started by his grandfather for commercial purpose deceives the society by claiming to be a religious leader as he knew that the objective behind the pagan lifestyle was for a few individuals to continue growing rich while others languish in poverty. He should have aborted the practice of the culture in the island after discovering that the practices being practiced by the society were not genuine rather he goes ahead to promote and strengthen its grasp by claiming to act as their religious leader who teaches them best practices of life. Fourthly, Lord Summerisle is also brainwashing the society by deceiving them that they are better-off without the government and going ahead to design a flag used by the citizens living gin the island. This shows that he is not sincere in his claims that they are better off without the government, but a way to exert his authority and control of the citizens living in the island. The island is being protected by a bunch of old guys who incorporates the element of utopia because the citizens are made to believe that their safety is guaranteed. As we all know, old men cannot be tasked with hefty responsibilities like providing security for the younger generation as they are weaker and the latter (young protecting the old) is possible (Hardy). Fifthly, Lord Summerisle also brainwashes the society by deceiving individuals that his island is composed of pleasant, friendly and cheerful individuals, yet sincerely it is the opposite. An example is that Howaie who is a police officer at first is denied entry into the island by a group of old men positioned as guards. This goes contrary to the societys expectations of a warm, loving and cheerful society who are expected to welcome and show hospitality to everyone including strangers visiting them for the first time. Sixthly, Lord Summerisle also brainwashes the society since citizens in the island are living in abject poverty. This does not sound right, especially for a leader who is supposed to set an example for citizens to follow, and protect their rights and privileges. Summerisle is considered the richest individual in the society, but many sources of his income are not revealed in the movie. Therefore, this means that he is the one encouraging negative virtue to uproot in the society as he contributes in the perpetrations of vices like corruptions which renders citizens poor in a society which is considered equal. Seventhly, the society is also brainwashed by Summerisle to the real meaning of “free will”. Using Howie’s case, Summerisle deceives Howie into participating in the festivals by lying on their significance and claiming to the public that Howie came to the appointed place out of his own free will. According to the movie, this is false because the decision to join the procession made by Howie was out of ignorance since he was not given an elaborate detail on the flow of events during the celebrations. Lastly, the public is deceived by Summerisle who contradicts himself be saying that animals were okay when offered a sacrifice to the gods. Children powerful when offered as sacrifices and adults right kind best when offered as sacrifices to appease the gods. This shows that he lacked a stand as he was ready to use anything as a sacrifice as long as the practice of the festival was maintained. Moreover, this shows his deception to the society because he claims to be a leader yet he cannot make effective and decisions like to the type of sacrificed be used (Hardy). Conclusion In conclusion, as eminent in the case of The Lego Movie by President Evil and The Wicker Man by Lord Summersile, the public has been brainwashed into adopting ideologies which are not theirs for the benefit of other parties in the society. In The Lego Movie by President Evil, president evil uses a couple of strategies to brainwash the society into seeing him as a perfect citizen hence turning a blind eye to his shortcomings. This aids in promoting his heinous acts to go unnoticed among the public because when they come to their senses, they find themselves in a much more complicated scenario than they were before. In addition, The Wicker Man by Lord Summersile, the public is deceived by Lord Summersile through the fake pagan culture and in the process creating pain and suffering of innocent citizens living in the island. In my opinion, the acts displayed by the two characters reveal the extent to which some public figures use their influence and wealth to perpetrate atrocities to their benefits in the society.
