The paper "Controlling and Preventing Drug Abuse" is a wonderful example of a research paper on social science. Drug use has been very essential especially for medical purposes. These drugs may also be harmful and cause disorderly in the functioning of a person. In the previous researches conducted, the determination of the effect of each drug has been a crucial consideration. In a bid to control its abuse, various strategies have been established which includes legalization and illegalization.

The issue off drugs has been very sensitive for a long period. This is mainly because it affects many people and may have serious repercussions. As a result, there have been strategies implemented to control its use illegalization included. This paper seeks to give an in-depth analysis of the control and prevention of drug abuse.Legalization of drugs has been a very hot debate among various people. From my point of view, the approach based on prohibition and criminalization, which has been in use for a long period, has not been effective in combating the crime.

In most cases, it has raised incarceration and cost the government many resources, which could be used in other meaningful activities ((Ghosh, 2010). This could be sometime challenged on the basis that each project requires time for its effective implementation but in this case, the practice has been in use for a very long period. I am not arguing that it has completely failed but that it has failed to curb it completely despite too many resources directed into it. Currently, there are various substances, which are consumed by people.

The choice of substance choice is personal. In the case of drugs, it is evident that all substances have an effect on the human body functioning. This is evident from the use of coffee, cigarettes, beer, and marijuana among others. In the past, the use of alcohol was prohibited which is now allowed although under some restriction. Therefore, no clear distinction why a drug is illegal today but legal tomorrow is available. Through prohibition, society suffers as is indicated from beer banning in the twentieth century.

During this period, the crime rates increased to alarming levels. Thus, the best way to control and eliminate the use of drugs in the society is through education and public health approach (Croft, 2000). Drug use does not always have negative effects on a person. For example, various drugs have been used to treat medical conditions under the prescription of medical personnel. Under such circumstances, they are informed on the dosage they are to use. Failure to stick to the prescription and use more or less of the drug may have serious repercussion sometimes in extreme of the drugs considered illegal.

Thus, proper consideration is necessary for the control of drugs. On the other hand, the presence of laws, which are not functional, causes more harm than the drugs themselves. It is evident that incarnations have been on the increase. In most cases, it is observed to be racial. Moreover, under such circumstances, most persons are not granted their constitutional rights. Therefore, are the laws on drugs put in place to enhance its conduction or break it? Such scenarios are very painful considering that all of us are equal when all the social status, tittles, and privileges are put at bay.

Thus if one anticipates justice to be done to him, then he should also practice justice to others. In addition, these laws have been denying the victims medication as would be required for their recovery. Moreover, they have propagated the crime to be conducted in more organized ways. As a result, there has been a consideration of the same in the legal systems, which have led to drug exception in the constitution. Therefore, all laws on drugs need to be critically reviewed to identify those that cause more harm than good and thus they should be abolished (Delattre, 2011).

Numerous benefits could be reaped out of the legalization of drugs. Some of the benefits include reduced crimes rates related to trafficking, gang wars, and substance obtaining (Miron, 2009). In addition, the levels of incarnation, which have been on the increase, could reduce significantly. The resources used in the banning of drugs are many. Thus if it is legalized, then the resources could be directed into other channels which would be more beneficial in the long run. Furthermore, people who use drugs such as marijuana for medical purposes would have access to it without straining too much (Klein, 2009).

Drugs have been considered illegal for a long time in a bid to control and eliminate their use. Despite this, in some instances, the laws formulated are not capable of achieving this and are sometimes more harmful to society. As such, legalization would reduce the much struggle for their termination and many benefits would be reaped. The approach of education and public health would be the best not only for the criminals but also to all stakeholders.
