The Conflict Resolver’s Paradoxical Identity: From Conflicted to Hybrid Empathy plays an important part in conflict resolution; however it creates internalized conflicts where it can resolve by identity hybridizationThere are three ways of conflict resolution process, the first way where the resolver does not change anything during the process, aside from a win- win settlement another is a win or lose if you are using a med-orb model where win is not possible. In the case of adopting a Buddhist perspective, a resolver shows and exercises love, compassion and calmness.

If the resolver exercises these traits during the process where everything is chaos, both sides will notice the calmness and goodness of their mediator, thus following him. In the third case, the conflict resolver will put himself on the shoes of the disputant, tries to understand them and show good traits towards them making him their role model. Identity is important in identity hybridization, one must know his identity first before being hybridized and turn it into something else. However, identities are constantly changing through time.

I agree with the author towards Plato’s thought (par 8) that the fundamental identity of different things resided in the realm of the Forms (Plato, 1966 as cited by author). It really denies it. It does not merely seem to deny it. And Plato would deny that what is heroic today is different from what it was before. People’s opinions about it might change, but those are shadows, not reality. But is there an assurance that the person is still the same if his identity changes? Hume suggested that the self is a bundle of perceptions, including memory that changes over time.

This precludes that any two people could be the same, but it allows that one can change, constantly, and still have some almost undying (at least in one’s lifetime) thread. However, amnesia and dementia may erase all of the person’s memories, which loses his link between his past and present, making him different person because arguably, a person with severe dementia or amnesia is not the same person, only the same body.A person composes of multiple selves (par 12), but to Baldwin (1897) a self has two aspects: the ego which represents the thoughts about oneself, and alter which represents the way one thinks of another (par 13).

Ego and alter play an important role in decision making and the way to react depending on situations. In Oupensky’s statement (par 14) one becomes master over the other for only thirty minutes, until a new one takes over the other. This is similar to Nietzsche’s notion of the self as a number of wills to power, each expressing itself as master at different times. Transformation of one’s identity becomes rapid if he encounters life altering situations like having survived in a car crash, earthquake etc or major problems such as dying of a close relative, a friend or other important persons that changes the perspective in one’s life.

In case of Buddhists’ self is unimportant and takes refuge in the Buddha with the embodiment of his principles of enlightenment (par 15). Buddhist changes their identity when facilitating conflict; they even participate as a disputant to be able to know the part of being a disputant without changing their identity. Example of this situation is the head of the family, who acts as a conflict resolver among his children, but if he is involved in a fight with his wife, he still has his identity as the head of the family but with different approach, because he is the one involved in a fight.

Identity is shaped by your parents, your past experiences, lessons in life, relatives, friends, teachers and even strangers, who in one way or another shape your identity. This makes a strong baseline of which you are, without these things you do not know who you are or what you are. This can lead to having identity crises. We define our own souls, we define who we are, we are the driver of our own self, if we let all the identities we encounter to be absorbed within ourselves, we become conflicting and we do not know who we are.

Having a hybridized identity is useful in understanding both parties during conflict resolution that results in a more positive way, but after each conflict resolution we have to come back to our old self.In “Teaching to Transgress”, the author discussed that race as a major factor affecting the education of black students in a white-black setting. She discussed the difference of teachings and atmosphere between the all-black school and black-white school and gave her overview and feelings on the matter.

The author used this reason to inform this problem to the public in order for them to address and resolve it. Discrimination plays an important part in hindering one’s ability to grow and to learn. It confines you to a smaller world when in fact there is a big world that can be explored.In the “Soul of Ice”, discrimination played also a big role in the author’s life, however, he did not use it in a positive way, unlike what the author did in “Teaching to Transgres”. The author used his bad experiences of discrimination to do bad things to the race that discriminated him.

It explained his feelings and thoughts towards the perception of white-skinned to black and the problems they are experiencing. The book gives you an overview on the life long battles of black skinned citizens towards discrimination and how the society perceived them.
