The bumper generally consists of a plastic cover over a reinforcement bar made of steel, aluminum, fiberglass or plastic. The bumper bar and its attachment are designed to crush in a low-speed crash to absorb energy. In some cases, polypropylene foam or formed thermoplastic is used in addition to or instead of crushable brackets and a bar. This allows for even more absorption of energy. By absorbing energy and getting crushed, the bumper creates inelastic collision by reducing the transfer of kinetic energy. The recent trend in bumper design, however, is related more to the pedestrian safety. 2. Crumple zones in cars Crumple zones are parts of the car that are designed to deform and crumple during collisions, thereby absorbing energy. These parts are typically in the front part of the vehicle, although they may also be in other parts of the vehicle. Crumple zones accomplish two safety goals: they reduce the initial force of crash and they redistribute the force before it reaches the passenger cabin. Crumple zones reduce the initial force of impact by creating a buffer perimeter around the most rigid parts of the car (engine and cabin). ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

More importantly, the variety of fluids that is present within the cars such as gear oil, brake oil and transmission oil amongst others are responsible for the generation of hydrocarbons, solvents and polyethylene glycol which is harmful to the environment (Environmental Protection Agency). Furthermore, brake shoes and clutches have the potential of emitting a contaminant termed as asbestos (Environmental Protection Agency). According to the National Cancer Institute, exposure to this mineral greatly increases the risks...

Design of Road Curves for Safety
...Design of Road Curves for Safety Introduction: A road is considered safe if it has a very less histories of accidents or collisions. But all roads would have had at least a few cases of minor collisions . Among the different road components, the curves are the major points of concern along the road system (Glennon, 2003). Even, among the most prominent industrial countries like France and Denmark , the available data show that curves constitute the major locations that have high incidence of accidents - about 20 percent of the reported figures. In the developing countries too these figures touch peak proportions of 70 percent of the total accidents reported in those places (Kirk, 1997)....
