Summary
Fiber What is the function of fiber in the body? “Dietary fiber from whole grains … helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease. Fiber-containing foods such as whole grains help provide a feeling of fullness with fewer calories and so help with weight management” (Whole Grains and Fiber, 2010, para…

Fiber can be “characterized by its solubility in the intestines. Soluble fibers have a high water holding capacity while insoluble fibers do not. “Despite the potential confounding of these classifications, both soluble and insoluble forms of fiber are important and appear to have different health properties in at least some settings” (Van Horn, 1997, para. 3 and 5). What are the fiber recommendations for children versus adults, according to the article? Van Horn (1997, para. 17) indicates that children should get the majority of calories from complex carbohydrates. However, because of concerns relating to growth and energy it has been suggested by Pediatricians that the “age plus 5” rule be observed. This means that if a child is five years old then he or she should consume 5 + 5 = 10g of fiber per day. Once the child’s intake of calories approaches that of an adult (1500 calories or more) then a total of no more than 25g is recommended (Van Horn, 1997 para. 18). A recent article suggests that children 1 – 3, 4 to 8, 9 to 13 and 14 to 18 should have 19g, 25g, 26 to 31g; and 29 to 38g respectively (Fiber & Children’s Diet (n.d). para. 2). The recommended intake of fiber for adults is 25 to 30g per day. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Fiber Optic Cables
...Fiber Optic Cables Digital communication in the current modern era has played a significant role in every sector including the social and economical sector. The creation of advanced technologies in terms of communication has considerably augmented the scope for the range of services that are travelled within the computer networks. This is the stage for declaring advantages related to fiber optics, as it is a carrier for providing limitless bandwidth that is not comparable with any other carrier or medium currently existed. Without fiber optics, applications or systems requiring high bandwidth would not be achievable. Moreover, fiber optics does not require any...

Fiber Optic cables
...Fiber optic cables I think we should start our topic by just asking a simple but important question what is a fiber optic cableA fiber optic cable is a cylindrical pipe. It may be up of plastic or glass a combination of glass and plastic. Fabrication of it is in such a way that this pipe can guide light from one end of it to the other. The idea of having light guided through bent glass is not new or high tech. Concept of total internal reflection of light through bent glass plays an important role for working fiber optic cable. The phenomenon of guiding light through bent glass has ...

Fiber Optics
...01 November 2009 The center of a fiber-optic cable is made of dozens or hundreds of minor threads of plastic or glass that makes use of the light to distribute signals. Each thread is acknowledged as an optical fiber, which is as thin as a human hair. Within the fiber-optic cable, a protected glass coat and a confined coating envelop each optical fiber. In place of utilizing electrical signals to distribute or move data, it makes use of light. With up-and-coming network environment the need for the higher data rate is also emerging. The customary cables contain various predetermined limits that cannot be crossed by tremendous sophistication of the technology. On the...

...in the scientific field the various health benefits of fiber were identified. Hence regular consumption of generous amounts of dietary fiber in the diet has been proven to reduce the risk for developing several diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity, blood pressure, gall stones, diseases of the colon and it has also been found to boost the immune system (Dietary fiber, 1996; Anderson et al, n.d). Research studies have revealed that people consume less than the recommended levels of dietary fiber. The amount of dietary fiber intake depends on the age, gender and total calorie intake (Anderson et al, n.d). The major...

DARK FIBER (FIBER OPTICS)
...Dark Fiber Introduction Essentially, fiber optics refers to light pipes. Since this was invented in 1970, its use and demand have ever been on the increase (Massa, 296). Computer networks, internet, electronic commerce, video, multimedia, data and voice have caused an increase in information traffic. Thus, there has been need for transmission media that would offer bandwidth capabilities for handling such enormous amount of information. Fiber optics has offered the solution to this due to its comparatively infinite bandwidth. Fiber optics is unaffected by neither electromagnetic interference nor radio frequency interference. They also withstand ambient...

Graphite fiber is a fiber with over 90%carbon. Carbon is made in broad selection with completely different characteristics using precursor’s fibers. The main precursors are cellulosic fibers used are cotton, phenolic fibers, petroleum or coal tar pitch, viscose rayon, and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) (Mahrez, Mohamed & Katman, 2005). Fiber and health benefit of fiber
...Fiber and health benefit of fiber Introduction Fiber mostly represents the “inert” food component that passes via the digestive system with no nutritional value or significant amount of calories, though, bearing very essential benefits to the human body. Initially, both in medical and other nutritional fields, specialists conventionally referred it as “roughage”. This is due to its characteristic contribution in aiding the health of the digestive track besides the entire body. Besides, fiber aids in shunning and reducing diverse diseases’ risks in the body, for instance, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders, which might worsened in its...

Fiber optics
... Fiber optics Fiber optics is referred to as the transmission of light through some long rods of fiber which are either glass or plastic. This light travels by internal reflection. The reason is that the medium of the core reflects more than the material surrounding it. As a result, light is continually reflected back into the core as it continues travelling down this fiber. This enables the fiber optic cables to transmit voice, images and even other forms of data in a very high speed that is almost the speed of light. Thus, a fiber optic cable is made up of thin strands of glass or even plastic. Each of the strands is a tenth less as thick as the strand of a human hair and it is capable of carrying approximated ten million calls... . The...
