Health Care Management System Insert Insert Meaning of leadership in health care Healthcare system is a foundation that is established to monitor the operation of the sick, old and the disabled. The principal intention of the health care system is to ensure that both of its clients receive equal and fair treatment. Therefore, in order to have effective treatment and care to the old and the disable, the management of the health care facility needs to ensure that there is effective leadership in place.
The aged are individuals who have a different perception and the need to be treated with a lot of care in order to please them (Willis, Reynolds, & Keleher, 2012). Therefore, leaders should ensure that they employ the required leadership style in order to facilitate the functionality of the operation of the health care system. The management of the system also needs to train its employees on how to handle the aged and the disabled.
Aspect of leadership in health care system
The effectiveness of the operation
The management has to employ various leadership styles to its employees in order to motivate them to put in more effort (Graetz, Rimmer, Smith, & Lawrence, 2011). Proper motivation of nurses and doctors in a health care system will make the employees and other subordinates to feel like part of the medical and hence producing quality work. For instance, the management in the health care system needs to employ free reign leadership to its employees. Free reign leadership style will enable the subordinates to participate in the decision-making process (McCrimmon, 2010). The decision made from the pool of ideas will highly boost the operations of the health care system. In addition, it will give employees the freedom to manage themselves; will make it be friendly with the aged as well as the disable.
Proper definition of duties and responsibilities
Good leadership in the health care system will enable the management of the health care system to delegate the functions and responsibilities effectively of its employees (Glasgow, 2009). Proper job delegation will give the room to a smooth flow of activities in the health care system. Therefore, it will ensure that the old, as well as the disable, will receive quality and timely service in the health care system. In addition, with proper role definition an individual will be held accountable for any shortcoming in the health care system. Therefore, the leadership in an organization will ensure that it controls the behavior of its subordinates to attain quality.
Training and development
Nurses and any other subordinate staff in an organization need adequate training in order to improve their effectiveness and efficiency in operation (Glasgow, 2009). It is, therefore the responsibility of the management to ensure that it adequately trains its nurses to attain the required skills and expertise to carry out their duties effectively. Apart from boosting their career level, the management will also be motivating its employees to put in more effort in their daily activities. Moreover, training and development will enable the nurses attain more skills to on how to handle the aged as well as the disable. In addition, the management can either use on the job training of its employees or take the to refresher causes.
Vision mission and objectives of the health care system
One of the primary objectives of leadership in a health care system is to ensure that it set goals and targets for the organization (Javadi & Ahmadi, 2013). Therefore, it is the responsibility of the leaders in the health care system to lay down strategies that will enable the health care meet its set objective. The primary goal of the health care will be to ensure that it provides quality serve to the aged as well ass to the people with disabilities. In order to achieve the set goals and objectives, leaders need to ensure that it adequately motivates its staff. Leaders in the health care system can provide that motivate its staff through proper rewards as well as recognition for any real thing that the employees does.
Rules and regulation
In order to ensure that there are efficient operations in the health care system; it is the duty of the leader to ensure that there are policies that govern the operations of the nurses. Therefore, the manager should ensure that there are adequate policy manuals to all employees in order to guide them in all their undertakings (Jones, Seoane, Deichmann, Richard, & Kantrow, 2011). In addition, the leader should also ensure that nurses adhere to the ethics and code of conduct. For instance, the nurses need to follow the policies laid down by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, to facilitate their professionalism and make the reliable decision during care. However, the leader is the one who influences the behavior of the subordinate staff. Depending on the leadership style, the leader will be able to change the habits of the workers to be hardworking as well as loyal. Moreover, in order to ensure that there is quality work in an organization, the leader will need to apply the management by objective style. In this case, the leader will have to ensure that all nurses and other subordinate staff work in line with the mission vision and purpose of the health care system.
Challenges in the health care system
Like any other organization, the health care system also has some significant challenges that can be an obstacle towards its set goals. For instance, the health care system can lack adequate resources to finance its operations. The people with disabilities, as well as the aged, are individual sensitive persons who need a lot of care and attention (Ridic, Gleason, & Ridic, 2012). In order to so, the leaders in the health care system need to ensure that they find adequate resources to take good care of the aged and people with disabilities. For instance, the United States introduced and put into practice the Affordable Care Act to ensure that health insurance covers all aged and disabled individuals. However, in order to properly deal with the challenges, it is the responsibility of the leader to ensure there is proper planning of activities in the health care system.
Lack of skilled personnel is also another challenge that the head in a health care system can be facing, for instance, the emergence of modern machines and equipment needs an expert to carry out its operations. Therefore, it is the role of the supervisor to ensure the skilled employees are outsourced or training the employees to acquire the new skills. Inadequate infrastructure is also another challenge that the facility can be facing (Karakitapoglu-Aygun & Gumusluoglu, 2013). Aged and people with disabilities are individuals who need quality and suitable infrastructure in order to make their life comfortable. Therefore, the leader should ensure that the infrastructure of the health care system supports their movement.
Improving the health care system
Nursing managers play a greater role in constructing a healthy environment that allows workers to deliver quality services to customers. They are the ones that implement changes from traditional methods and cultures to the improved ones. The healthcare industry needs leadership that motivates, inspires, motivate and encourages nursing workers with reduced bureaucracy. Subordinates are invited to uphold leadership skills in their practice for they will become future leaders to bring better reforms to the care of the aged and disabled in the health care industry.
Features of a nursing health care leader
A nursing healthcare leader should show the following characteristics for adequate service delivery and quality care. First, the leader should be aware of the relationship between the efforts of the workers and the rewards as well as punishments. In addition, the manager should base on reward, punishment, as well as inducement to control the followers (Vinod & Sudhakar, 2011). The transactional leader sets objectives and motivates the followers by promising real rewards for quality performance. The transactional leadership theory allows a leader in nursing healthcare system to motivate the employees with rewards and punishments contributing to the delivery of high-quality service. Therefore, this leadership style is more effective in managing nurses’ delivery of quality service to the aged and the disabled.
This theory enables the leader the roles and responsibilities to define the roles and responsibilities of the followers and organizational expectations. Therefore, it gives direction to the leader and subordinates to achieve the set goals and objectives. Moreover, the theory allows the supervisor to encourage delivery of quality service through issuing incentives to motivate the subordinates (Oberlander, 2012). The transactional approach is active in supervising nurses as it is best applied in times of crisis because it offers urgent answers to the problems. However, it is not advisable for leaders to emphasizing the transactional leadership theory principles for it can force one to make a hasty decision that can be very costly to the organization. As a result, the technique can contribute to a stressful moment to the nurse for one can act unethically to avoid punishment or to receive the rewards.
How the leader can guide the followers to achieve the set goals
Clarification of the scope of work; the leaders in the health care system should ensure that they clearly define the scope of the work that one is supposed to be doing (Sherman & Pross, 2010). In addition, the leader should also ensure he removes all the obstacles that can prevent nurses from achieving the set goals and objectives. Furthermore, the manager should also motivate the subordinates through giving the rewards for any goal that they achieve. In addition, the management should also ensure that it reasonably remunerates its employees in order to enable them to leave a comfortable life.
Path-goal leadership theory
It contains various components such as; leadership style, task structure and the taste and preference of the subordinate. It is whereby the goals of the organization are well stated and what to be done to fulfill those goals put by the senior-most management. The time limit for such goals are usually well stated and elaborated so as each and every health care worker is in a position to comprehend and do as required of him by the organization.
A given leader can never change his behavior because of factors and characteristics such as experience of workers and formal type of authority and task design, such affect the outcome of the leader behavioral relationship. Any employees who have a lot of experience in the field are not spared of performing his duties accordingly. Neither does the task design influence ones duties responsibilities; he has to do his work as required of him by the management.
It entails the following leadership styles: the delegation leadership style. It gives the proposal that all nursing leaders should delegate leadership style to their junior staff. Such helps the subordinate to know what to do at a given time. It is one of the techniques that make sure that no time wastage in the health center because every worker knows what to do at a particular time and day. By so doing, the subordinate can offer excellent services to the patients and the aged in the society. In addition, the leader should be in a position to provide a very conducive working environment.
Directive leadership style; Leaders also should give clear directions to the subordinate by making sure that the path to the objective is very clear and precise. Such method enables subordinate to follow a particular route for the betterment of the company. Workers can offer quality services to the aged and disabled since they receive directions from their leaders towards the given goals.
Supportive - leadership style; the leader should provide a friendly environment for supporting the subordinates psychologically, also by encouraging the subordinates to involve themselves in operations and decision-making. By so doing, subordinate are in a position to feel free and give their ideas and views because the leaders give them consideration. Leaders can know what has to be done at the lower level of the management in order for better services.
Participative leadership style; Such form enables the nurse leaders to deliver high-quality services to aged persons because they are handed the chance to participate in offering services to the elderly and disables in the society. Take effect in the delivery of the services is the most important thing in the health center field. It encourages workers to offer the best services since they interact with the patients. Subordinate have a good relationship with the senior most management thus enabling the smooth running of the organization and delivering best services to the customers who in such case are patients.
The transformational leadership style; It is whereby the leaders engage their given followers in daily activities of the organization. It also provides a sense of mission through the promotion of active behaviors and thoughts among the subordinates. Thus, such leadership style gives motivation to the followers, such that members put their interests first to promote innovation and creative ideas to solve problems thus bringing changes to the healthcare sector. Moreover, such leaders are mostly involved in the process because they have a lot of energies, passion, and enthusiasm. In addition, they focus on assisting the followers achieve their intended goals.
In the nursing sector, such leadership may contain intellectual stimulation among the leaders who will challenge the status quo and promote creativity and innovation among the subordinates. Such nursing leaders that follow transformational leadership look for new adventures and opportunities to learn because they individualize considerations. It involves supporting and encouraging the subordinates so to improve their performance and workplace relationships.
The fact is that the American population is aging fast, as the number of people with disabilities also is increasing. Moreover, financial factors significantly influence healthcare in the US. High population overburdens healthcare because it is a right and not a privilege. The levels of income determine levels determined the health outcomes of the aged and disabled in the US. It also means that the poor, elderly and those disabled usually have poor health in comparison to their wealthy counterparts.
Factors that affect healthcare leadership include: leaders find it difficult to budget because of the fluctuating healthcare service, as well as product prices caused by inflation. In addition to that, health insurance cover affects the patients incentives. Also, seek coverage as the fiscal responsibility that is directed to the patients, making it hard for the leaders to together with the aged and disabled patients.
Therefore, the healthcare leaders have to offer healthy decisions that reflect the federal government legislation and agendas. As well as the nursing leaders to make, the best decisions because they have been given the fiscal responsibility, which is under the new dispensation. The leaders usually have a financial responsibility to the employers, employees, and patients at large. Therefore, they must understand basic concepts about budget creation as well as fiscal responsibility.
Task structures
it is whereby the job is divided into various sections. Workers work and report to a given leader in the organization. Such leaders are the ones who head different departments in a particular company. Various heads of departments in the healthcare center are answerable to the general manager for any misunderstanding in that specific department.
Units are usually separated basing on the activities and services they offer in the health center. Some of such departments can be pharmacy, which deals with medicines. In addition, there is an accounting department, which deals with keeping the books of accounts for the health center. Also, there human resource management department, which deals with the welfare of workers such as salary remuneration and incentives. It helps identify the most improved employee in the organization so that the morale is boosted.
Taste and preference
It is what the staff likes and dislikes. It is what a particular person wants most than other. Based on the health center, staff specializes in the field, which is best suited. If one is best on feeding the aged and disable then he has to go on that field and make sure that he perfects it. In addition, the leader in the organization needs to decentralize most of its activities for effectiveness. Moreover, employee specialization also has a greater contribution to employee performance. There are also employees who prefer to work under certain conditions.
The management should ensure that it creates conducive working environment. However, there are also employees who perform better under motivation. Other employees just prefer recognition. The management should also ensure that it recognize good performance and reward it immensely.
The best employee is the one that work under minimal supervision. Such an employee knows what has toed done at what time and a particular condition. He should be in a position to finish his work in time beating the deadlines given. Unlike others who work under the supervision, such workers make many mistakes since it looks like they are working under certain pressure from the leaders.
Those employees that like motivation should be motivated by the organization so as they perform well. Giving those incentives also helps a lot in that they can be paid over time. Such will make them work extra hard I order to get the extra coin.
Conclusion
Nurses must equip themselves with necessary leadership skills and styles for them to be successful in the nursing practice field. Such will help them to offer real leadership in the healthcare sector for them to deliver quality services to the patients. Good leadership styles are relevant care of aged and disabled persons in the healthcare industry. The different leadership styles can affect service delivery and quality of care within the community in individual case management. In addition, there is diversity within Western healthcare systems that has an impact on leadership decisions. Leaders are hence given advice to exhibit effective leadership behaviors and styles. Therefore, leadership behavior determines the healthcare success in delivery of quality service to aged and disabled persons in the society.
