CRITIQUE OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH ARTICLE affiliation Introduction The research problem as per the article is hip fracture in older people. It investigates the effects of providing elderly hip fracture patients with an information booklet in the early postoperative period. It is estimated that 3000 individuals over 65 years sustained hip fracture every year. This problem is crucial to nursing since the adverse psychological, physical and societal consequences are alarming. The reduced functional ability actually affects patients, and the economic implications cannot be undermined. Failure to achieve the pre-fractural status in the patients adversely affects them, and studies show that failure to understand the importance of mobilization of the patients leaves them passive n their recovery. It is estimated that hip fractures will increase by 100% by 2026. Numerous interventions and studies have been carried out in relation to this problem. The studies were conducted by both nursing and other schools, and this clearly shows how big of a problem this is. The hypothesis and questions stated in this study include; Prevalence of hip fracture, What causes hip fractures, Age prevalence of hip fractures, Regaining functionality, Economic and physical functionality? The studies conducted on the patient on the hip fracture are some of the problems experienced in the hospitals, and the statistics are based on actual facts and tests that have been carried out. The objective of the study is to determine how the hip fractures can be reduced. It also seeks to determine how quick recovery is enhanced after the fractures have been obtained. The main objective of this research is to examine whether providing information booklets on mobilization improves early mobility post-surgical repair of hip fracture. The framework involved providing the patients with this booklet then investigating how the patients reacted to it. Did it help with the repair of the bone fractures or not? The document is relatively current since it was published on 2011. This shows that this is an ongoing current problem, and so the studies conducted are to benefit the current generation to prevent the increase in the cases in the future. The literature review is organized logically, and it adequately supports the need for the study. The problem is specially stated, and a research carried out to determine how to solve it. The problems that originate as a result of the hip fracture problem are properly analyzed, and solutions are explained logically and the research well stipulated. The results will thus be very conclusive and beneficial. Methods The author logically presents information on the reliability and validity of the instruments. He states the various methods that can be used which include samples from major urban universities. The patients who took part were at least three days post-surgery for hip fracture. They also used nursing intervention where clinical staff were involved and were educated about the booklet hence they could help the patients and encourage them to read the book throughout the intervention period. This explicitly addresses the threats inherent in the study design. Out of the 14 outcome measures identified, only two demonstrated face validity for measuring from high to low mobility. The demographic data provided evidence of human intervention since they were the ones that provided the data that was used for the research. Ethical concerns are evident in this passage. The participants having to seek family approval is evidence enough, and voluntary and written consent was sought so as to avoid complications and legal issues that would arise in the case of anything. But it has to be remembered that they are not supposed to be bound, they should be allowed to withdraw at their wish if need be from the study (Murphy, S., Conway, C., McGrath, N., ’Leary, B., Sullivan, M., & Sullivan, D. 2011).. The study is however not described in enough detail for replication. It is kind shallow, and extensive research would have to be conducted to make it conclusive. Results The characteristics of all the sample can be explained in terms of all participants, usual care group, routine attention and booklet with basic information and usual attention and brochure with more information. They were analyzed in accordance with age, mental state, and place of residence and such. The participants answered the questions together i.e., answered all the questions as asked by the researcher at that specific time. Numerical, geographic and demographic data were collected. This data was then represented in a table. The chart shows the findings elaborately, and they can easily be interpreted hence being a very efficient choice although for individual who are not able to interpret the tables and charts it may be difficult. Deductive data analysis procedures are used in this context. This is because according to the text, they took into consideration the number of respondents that would be efficient to make the research fruitful and meaningful and took their time to use different approaches to analyzing their data. These criteria include age, demography, location, mental status and such. After analyzing all these approaches, a conclusive conclusion is then deduced. The data supplements the information in the table. The data represents the information as collected and very precisely represents the information in the figures as collected. The text then simplifies the results indicated on the table and helped the reader understand what the table is all about. According to the findings, a final valid sample of 62 participants was obtained. Data for 18 participants were missing hence were not used for the final analysis. The patients were found to have an average age of 78.9 years. The members mostly women of which half lived alone dominated having 85.5% of the total study. The period from time of admission to time of surgery was in almost all cases later than 24 hours. Delayed surgery resulted in lack of appetite, energy, and strength. Implication For Practice The author relates the findings to the study’s purpose. This defines what the problem is and lays down the strategies towards research about this problem. The problem seeks to investigate the effect of providing older hip fracture patients with booklets in the early postoperative period. This study has described in detail how the booklets have contains the knowledge necessary for the patients to be able to recover or be able to resume their mobility again. The rate of hip fractures keeps increasing as per the previous study (Murphy, S., Conway, C., McGrath, N., ’Leary, B., Sullivan, M., & Sullivan, D. 2011). This is alarming. Previous study has shown that delayed surgery led to a loss of appetite, vigor and strength. The current study concurs with this and has further demonstrated that these effects of prolonged fasting ultimately led to subsequent difficulty concentrating on these booklets. The major limitation of the study is that it relied predominantly on sample size. The large numbers resulted in the findings reaching a significant level. The mobility levels among the different patients were also limited to some patients over and under estimated their mobility standards. This research has resulted to the development of another new study which primarily explored education as an intervention to improve early mobility in postoperative hip fracture patients. The current study was focused on providing the booklets to the patients and how this would affect them only. Patient education is deficient. Nurses can thus use knowledge in their practice and by educating the patients; they will help them in their healing journey. The patients will have the knowledge that they require in helping them get over the hip fracture, and they can use this to help themselves grow. Overall Presentation and Final Summary The title accurately describes the type of study, significant variables and target population. It explicitly states that the survey is directed towards old people with hip fractures and how providing information booklets in their early postoperative stages enhance their healing. The abstract accurately represents the study. It clearly highlights the aim of the research, the background; the design methods used and summarize the results as well as the conclusion in a simple and understandable language. The report is logically consistent explicitly analyzes the problem in detail, the ways in which the study was conducted, and it gives the tabular representation of the data as was collected. The report uses current research to reach its conclusion and shows actual data as was collected. The writing style seems to be clear and concise; therefore, anybody can easily understand it. It gives the reader a clear picture of what is happening by clearly presenting the abstract, introduction, the findings, results and the conclusion more clearly.
