Introduction – the article by Lucille A. Joel gives due recognition of the contribution by Patricia Benner to nursing theory but more importantly, Benner has brought nursing to a higher level of professional practice which continues to influence the teaching of nursing in schools. In this article, the author recounted how Benner with her initial collection of nursing stories was by then able to offer her insights and conclusions on the true nature of nursing, an epiphany of sorts.
Synopsis - the article gives a concise and comprehensive review of the body of work by Benner in the nursing profession. It summarizes how nurses originally start from theories only to gradually progress over time through the steps from a beginner (novice) to becoming an expert by which time the nurse is able to assess a medical situation almost instinctively because of vast knowledge and experience acquired over the years in varied clinical and practical settings. In the article, a Skill Acquisition Paradigm is again discussed and emphasized for professional growth which is in effect the essence of Benner's theory, the continuous acquisition of experiences.
Conclusion – the article is a tribute to Benner's theory and recounts how professional nurses should be grateful for the valuable contributions of dedicated practitioners like Benner.
