This literature review is a judgment of the health problems of the Mexicans, which is a major dilemma of the state. The most serious health problems which are identified in the state of Mexico are heart disease, intestinal disorder, cirrhosis, diabetes and malnutrition, infectious diseases such as AIDS and TB. The leading causes of death among the males are due to accidents, homicides and in the case of women, the major reason for the increase in the mortality rate is the heart disease, diabetes etc.
TB is frequent among the adults of the state and maternal mortality is also frequent. Malaria and other diseases due to malnutrition occur in the rural areas. Heart diseases had become a leading cause for death in the Mexico since 1988. In Mexico AIDS is also the main cause for the increase in the death rate. The article “Health Care in Mexico” by Jose Marc Castro discuss that there are many health problems in Mexico because of the use of the pesticides. Most of the Mexicans are engaged in agricultural activities which result in the many diseases because of the use of the pesticides. . Many of the migrants of Mexico are likely to have mental health problems.
Most of them migrate to US and are experiencing depression and anxiety. There are appropriately 12 million people born in Mexico and are migrating to US. They are under depression because they have to leave their friends and relatives and also they are not able to meet the economic needs. Isolation is the findings in many of the cases which causes depression in the Mexicans. Isolation may be related to the unfulfilled relationships and it may also occur because of the separation from the family.
Shari Roan says that “Mexican migrants are prone to mental health disorders” (Roan, 2011) when they are compared to the Mexicans who were born in the United States. Industrialization in Mexico has become a factor for the contamination of the air. Exposure to air pollution can cause many respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis and lung cancer. Asthma has become a threat to US Mexico border population and compromises the health and quality of life of those that suffer from the disease.
Asthma is thought to be caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors and is left untreated. Since many of the Mexicans are engaged in agricultural activities, contact with pesticides aggravates asthmatic symptoms in these people. Researches have also proved that genetic variation in the chromosome “9q 21.31” (Novel Genetic Region Identified for Childhood Asthma in Mexicans, 2009, para. 1) as a cause for asthma in Mexican children.
