To create the entity relationship diagram, we identify the entities or actors who interact and relate with each other to affect the various processes in the database. Essentially, the main entities for the database include the Judge, Defendant, Case, Prosecutor, and Defending Barrister. These actors will form the entities for our entity relationship diagram. The entities have different relationships with one another. The next step is identifying the relationship between these entities. A judge presides over one case in which the defendant is charged with one or more offenses. Several defendants could be charged in one case just as one defendant could be charged in several cases. A prosecuting counsel prosecutes the defendant or defendants in a case or case. A defendant or defendants are defended by a defending barrister. The relationships are represented using a diamond shape in the entity relationship diagram that is joined by connectors indicating the relationship type (one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many).
