Mathematical Statistics and Its Impacts on Law Enforcement
Introduction
Statistical tools are employed in different areas for the evaluation of data. Raw data is subjected to the analysis process to help generate conclusive results. There are many methods of applying these statistical tools and the methods applied depend on the complexity of the data under analysis and the type of technology available. Old methods of analysis involve manual computing and processing of data while modern statistics involve the use of computer and tailor made programs to aid in statistical analysis.
Statistics and the law
Law enforcement agencies and the lawyers need to be conversant with statistical tools as they encounter different situations where they are required to apply these analytical tools. Some areas where statistics has had an impact on law enforcement are;
Statistics is employed in conducting survey about the law enforcement agencies. The variables subjected to analysis include the number of state police, municipal police, special police, sheriff departments and count police. The aim of conducting the analysis is to determine on average the number of people served by one policeman. Based on the outcome, significant changes can be effected to improve the number of the law enforcement agencies thus improving services offered to the civilians. The program used to conduct the research is the law enforcement and administrative statistics (LEMAS). This statistical survey also presents other information about the law enforcement agencies, this information include the spending, salaries to employees, levels of employment and departmental functions, based on this information, the agencies can be improved. Thus applying statistics improve the law enforcement process (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2009).
Lawyers use statistical tools for their data evaluation and presentation. In the industrial tax appeals, regression analysis of the sales has to be conducted in the determination of tax. This involves econometrics, computation of variance and plays a significant role in determination of the actual value. Lawyers also use statistical tools to evaluate data and evidence presented to him. Lawyers equipped with statistical methods defend their clients better. Lawyers also use deductive logic to defend their clients. Lawyers involved in civil suits have to use statistical tools to compute interests, percentages, tax, proportions, monetary computations and other numerous valuations involved when settling legal claims. The use of statistics tools therefore aid the lawyers in deducing correct descions as well as in calculation of the correct fines, legal payment, claims and other fees. Thus statistics impacts positively in enforcing the law.
Surveying crime
Statistics plays an important role in surveying crime, data collected from crimes scenes can be evaluated using statistical tools and from the obtained results, conclusions and projections can be made. This helps in the accurate determination of crimes crime treads and helps in formulating accurate results on ways of solving these crimes. Statistics is also used in forensic study for evaluation of the corrected evidence (Penick et al, 1976)
Suppressing crime and terrorist threats
For security agencies to combat crime and terrorism threat, they need to collect a lot of information, process, analyze and interpret this information. Various artificial intelligence technologies (AI) are used. These incorporates some activities such as systems that support information sharing and collaboration among the analyst, techniques for data mining which helps discover the hidden patterns of terrorist activities incorporated in massive data stores and the Analysis of the social network to help in predicting and assessing terrorist activities. The AI technology greatly relies on statistical analysis and greatly improves the process law enforcement operations.
Law enforcement is also greatly influenced by the accurate interpretation of the collected data, inaccurate data collection, misrepresentation and misquotation of data greatly affects the decisions made in courts. Proper application of the correct statistical tools is necessary to avoid costly mistakes that can’t be reversed. Mathematical computations thus impacts positively and simplifies decision making law courts.
Evidence analysis
When analyzing evidence, a lot of probability is applied. Probability is one of the statistical tools used in data analysis. Mathematical reasoning is required during the evaluation of the evidence collected. Analytical tools thus simplify the process of analyzing the collected evidence.
Actuarial computation
Damage caused or imposed against someone must be computed correctly, statistics greatly enhance this process and impacts positively in simplifying these calculations. There is need for lawyers to be equipped with this knowledge (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 2009).
Conclusion
Statistics plays and important roles in law enforcement process. It is necessary for state police, lawyers, magistrates and judges to be equipped with adequate statistic knowledge to help them in finding legal solutions to civil cases. Statistics also improves the process of evidence correction, analysis and finding solutions to organized crimes and terrorist activities.
