Summary
In the current society, there has been a widespread debate on where the responsibility of parents ends and where individual accountability begins. In the United States, this issue is more pressing with the society's tradition of emancipation. With the current trend of pursuing independence from parental authorities, there lies the question of whether parents should still handle the financial responsibility of sending their grown-up children to college.

However, Rock-Richardson should also realize that her situation might not apply to all college students and that most students who are supported by their parents should take this merely as a privilege and can still learn to manage their time and money efficiently. In the article, Rock-Richardson documents how she worked hard to earn her degree and argues that college students should learn by her example. It should be noted that, she does exempt students who cannot pay their tuition because of "disabilities and extenuating situations.

" She claims that student has the sole responsibility of supporting their education because in the future they will benefit from their efforts. Contrary to what society believes, parents should not feel obliged to shoulder the educational expenses of their children. She further states that being able to secure a college education through your own efforts will instill you with the importance of being able to efficiently manage your time and money. The experience of Rock-Richardson is very enlightening and can serve as an inspiration to college students who do not receive financial support from parents.

I agree with the author that lack of finances is not a hindrance is getting a hard earned diploma because we are all equipped with the skills and competences to work. If an individual truly desire to be educated, there are various opportunities to earn money in order to pursue this dream even without parental involvement. I also agree with the Rock-Richardson that financing yourself through college teaches you to manage your time and money to college. Having a job and going to college school at the same time is a daunting task which requires the efficient management of resources.

Students who work should find time to attend their job responsibilities while making room for studying their lessons and finishing their home works. Because all a person has is hard-earned money, he also learns to value his financial resources and allocate it most efficiently. The author must have been so successful in learning these skills because the article documents how she juggled the demands of academics, a job, and marriage life all at the same time. However, I also believe that Rock-Richardson fell short of considering the situation of students.

At birth, we are all given with unique abilities that we could utilize in facing life's challenges. From her illustration, it seems that Rock-Richardson had been provided with a higher than average intelligence which enabled her to work, study, and get straight As at the same time. For an average or slow learner, having to work for finances is detrimental or even become a barrier to earning a diploma. Rock-Richardson seems to generalize that financial support from parents is ridiculous. I disagree with her because it will be very disrespectful for a child to refuse the help offered by the parents and work like a slave to finance his college education.

I believe that if parents sincerely offer help, this should be honored and accepted. Time and money management can still be learned even if you don't have a job because
