The paper "The Purpose of Personal Psychosynthesis" is a great example of an assignment on medical science. In personal psychosynthesis, the assimilation of the personality takes place around the personal self, and the individual attains a level of functioning one is his work and the other is relationships which are regarded as healthy one by the criteria set by mental health (Crampton 1972 p56)

Assagioli noticed that an individual’s psychological growth has two different phases. The first phases consisted of the main part of the personality i.e is “I”. Personal psychosynthesis also studies the functioning of "subpersonalities" in a person. These are internal structures that develop due to some conflicts which arise as a result of some experiences Van der Kolk 1995 p43). A person’s devolvement changes these sub-personalities into the I. Usually, this procedure may be assisted in "mapping" the unconscious by applying psychological testing on the patient. This is what is called t "personal psychosynthesis." (Frankl 1963 p69)

The objective of personal psychosynthesis is to incorporate or synchronize the three concepts by means of identifying conflicts or defects in the personality and continuously finding ways to heal the conflicts (McGihon.1996 p19.)

  • What is the personal self? What are its two most central functions? What is the purpose of the Dis-identification Exercise in working with parts of the personality?

Answer

Personal self and central functions

The personal self according to Ascoli is just the representation of the self however this representation seems to be reflected on a human level. It is considered to be the essential being of the person, it is a different being however it can not be separated from any part of an experience The personal self is also considered as I or at times even the “self-conscious “(Assagioli, 2000 p 19.)

The two most central functions of the personal self of consciousness and will can be seen in the oval diagram as a centric circle (Molly 1983 p78). The personal self is aware of what the psyche-soma consists of, the contents of the experience keep changing but the person remains with the experience.
