For a company to maintain a high-level competitive advantage within the market it is important for the said company to be in possession of a long term plan. This is a business strategy which must include long term longs and objectives on how the goals are to be realized (Arora 2004, p. 45). In addition, these goals will be ways by which an organization can differentiate itself from its competitors. The process of decision making must be guided by these goals to minimize the possibility of the stakeholders pursuing different goals at the expense of those of the company (Bellgran et al 2010, 12). The main objective of this paper is to assess the role of operations management in the realization of business goals. This will be through an understanding of the relationship between a business strategy, operations management strategy and productivity.

• • The role of a business strategy and operations strategy

A long term plan for business growth and development is a business strategy. Through this strategy, an organization often has the ability to outline individual business functions to ensure that there are ways through which these functions; operations, marketing and finance, can support the long-term plan (Arora 2004, p. 55). This is an indication that every department in business has a responsibility for the realization of the intended business objective. The realization of this objective is highly dependent on the ability of these departments to identify their roles and the levels of expertise needed to realize these goals (Beckman et al 2008, p. 100).

For a business strategy to be considered as workable, it must be aligned to different factors that affect organizational success. These factors include a proper work-life balance of the employees and the availability of the most appropriate conditions within the environment to support the professional capabilities of the employees (Beckman et al 2008, p. 105). In the contemporary society characterized by high-level competition and the availability of the internet, it is important for companies to develop plans that are sufficient to ensure a high level of competitive advantage in different sectors (Bellgran et al 2010, 50). This is an indication that for an organization to be able to function, it is important to develop an operations strategy which will be used in the determination of the best supporting aspects that can propel the business strategy to desire levels. The essence of any strategy in a business entity is to ensure high levels of competitiveness of a business through the provision of a measure of its productivity (Arora 2004, p. 56).

• • Operations strategy

An operations strategy falls in the category of a long term plan which can be used in the determination of the operations functions that are specific to the design and the use of different resources in the realization of the business strategy (Bettley 2005, p. 111). This is an indication that through an operations strategy it would be easier to develop specific policies that can be used in the determination of the best areas to implement business resources (Arora 2004, p. 63). The process of specifying the design that is to be used in the implementation of business resources revolves around the realization that through the determination of the location, size and type of facilities that are available (Beckman et al 2008, p. 106). An organization will be able to identify and acquire the necessary work skills and talents to be able to embrace different technological aspects in the realization of organizational goals (Welch et al 2007, p. 79). It is, therefore, necessary for the management of any organization to ensure that the operations strategy is in agreement with the organization’s business strategy to increase the probability that an organization will realize its goals and objectives (Slack et al 2007, p. 49).
