Name Instructor Course Code Due Date Еnvirоnmеntаl Auditing Маnаgеmеnt Systems Background ISO 14000 is the set criteria for corporations guiding their environment management systems. The certification is a manual for the necessities for environmental performance. Companies are supposed to use ISO 14001-2004 to generate a framework for their environmental management structure. Company’s’ nature of activities, products, services and location are the determining factors for the extent of application. Companies using the criteria have goodwill to the management, employees and stakeholders in regard to the measurement of environmental impact. The benefits of using ISO 14001-2004 range from low distribution costs, reduced cost of waste management in addition to reduced waste management cost Management Incentive through Investment Equity (MITIE) is a company that specializes in strategic outsourcing and energy services. The company choice is largely because the firm displays capabilities in many business solutions and does a good job in the world of waste management. The company approaches its clients and after finding its clients’ needs uses its specialists and technology to provide solutions as soon as possible. MITIE has a working relationship exclusively driven by market capability. The team ensures it is up to date with the latest developments affecting modern business. According to MITIE, collaborative partnership is what waste sustainability is all about (Freeman 5). The study will approach the bigger picture of environmental management system taking into account the modern business model. MITIE having the immense experience in waste management outsourcing will help to show the connecting dots necessary to realize design and the implementation of sustainable environmental best practice. Introduction MITIE strategy of working with a range of customers has enabled them come close to waste sustainability. So far the company’s pool of awards and accreditations include British Association of Landscape industries (BALI), ISO 9001 on Quality, ISO 14001 Environment, OHSAS 18001 Health and safety Assessment Scheme, SAFE contractor and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA). An acknowledgement that there has been some tremendous shift from the traditional 20th century waste procurement strategy to the 21st century strategic environmental outsourcing is the beginning point for companies eyeing an appropriate Environment Management System (EMS) (Freeman 7). ISO 1400 encourages that recyclable materials have to be separated and then collected separately by the waste management agency. Materials that have to be separated are plastics, glass, card, paper and metal as a minimum. Freeman explains that Scottish businesses are also required by law to ensure that the collected waste achieves highest quality of recycling (12). To achieve this, businesses have to ensure that the behavior of the staff changes to realize consistency. In addition, companies have to ensure the collecting agency is compliant in materials recovery facility (MRF). Compliance in this case refers to the process not undermining the hierarchy and that the recycled products are of the same quality to the collected material (Freeman 26). Some aspects like those that relate to the disposal of food waste, starting January 2014 that require companies that produce waste in excess of 50kg to present it for separate collection. This will be followed by the 2016 provision which will require production of waste of 5 kg or more per week. In order to lead the world into a better Green revolution, it will be inevitable to usher in a whole new level of cooperation and corroboration where ideas must be exchanged and friendship forged. Just as oil dependency is for the selling and buying states, so must the fight against `Going Green’, which must be more than the actions of a single company. It has to be a new living system for the people of United Kingdom. (Freeman, 28-37). Stages of an EMS as defined by ISO 14001 Standard Commitment and policy IMITIE management declaration that they needed a new approach to waste, one that works for the new economy showed the management commitment to environmental improvement. The management has displayed understanding of the environmental issues facing the planet. The features of the current energy climate era include the desperate need for energy, ways that the need affects the world around us and the human response to those effects. It is now known that the damage already done to the atmosphere are signs of the perfect storm with the convergence of greenhouse effect and the overarching need for more consumption. The company commitment is evident looking at their strategy which has seven elements. The strategies are: recruitment of the best in the industry, providing world class services by taking a long-term view in managing risk as well as expanding their capabilities in complementary markets and ensuring operational excellence. The company applies waste hierarchy by combining strategies which has enabled achievement of the best results. The company’s extensive experience with both the public and private sector in waste hierarchy implementation has seen the company realize that a shift in their approach and culture is important. Implementation Training is the most important component of implementation and this should be done using the necessary resources. The management needs to explain to their co-workers since success of EMS will call for all the stakeholders otherwise the change just like other organizational changes will face resistance. While the world continues to need the natural resources, the overall availability has decreased. MITIE strategic outsourcing sets it apart from other similar companies for it combines innovation with investment and then integrates management. Environmental management is not directly a factor of revenue and therefore companies must manage to ensure the department is an asset for its sustainability. When auditing management systems, it is important for the auditor to understand that positive results will only be realized by inclusion of all the stakeholders the government included. Efforts by a state to offer energy resource subsidies in an effort to offset price increase will only postpone the problem thereby perpetuating the problem then one day the forces between demand and stifling innovation will break. Biodiversity loss caused by the overcrowding of the earth and demand for higher living standards has and will continue to ask for more structures to be erected, resource extraction and construction of roads. Most of this will only be possible through ecosystem, bio-system disruption and deforestation. Due to inter-connectivity when one thing is disrupted the effects will be felt everywhere. To the company, reduce is all about getting creative and looking at opportunities that indicate less will finally be more. Reuse is evident where the company works with National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) in an effort to find use of redundant products like furniture to charitable organizations. The charitable organization uses the furniture as raw materials. Recycle is demonstrated by the company partnership with full source-segregation scheme for recycling specially made for local opportunities. The company also finds alternative outlets for substantial industrial wastes especially in the aerospace industry (Freeman 24-26). Evaluation Operations of EMS need to be evaluated to determine whether objectives are being met. The company uses MiWorld, which is a web based management system, which makes it easier for both the company and the customers to monitor performance. Lately, the company helps clients save up to 15% once contracted, but is also making it possible for clients to make more changes to their operations in a way that adds value. EMS audit may present difficulties especially if the company being audited is not utilizing its full potential. Just like United Parcel Services (UPS), the company carries a screening of the company’s operations and analysis comparing it to similar companies in the industry. This service has the advantage in that it is difficult for a company to develop the complex systems and products that will beat the market. This is for the simple reason, the innovations are happening much faster and what the firm may boast of today as a genius service or product gets out of fashion faster. MITIE has invested in an integrated FM service that is run by Maximo Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system which is accessible via the net enabling functions at any location. The company has also automated a number of its processes integrating them with their clients. MITIE security centre uses tracking, alarm and remote security monitoring thereby ensuring its internal and external controls are secure. EMS works well with the company and the auditor does not have to physically carry out the audit as it is web based. Review Top management of MITIE reviews the operations of EMS making any corrections incase of inconsistencies. Company’s outsourcing product uses the drivers for change to review the compliance both to the company and its clients. As European Union and United Kingdom waste legislation proposes, companies should segregate their waste, measure, manage waste safely and appropriately, keep a record of waste processes and check that waste contractors comply with waste guidelines. Reviews have helped the company realize that initiatives such as recycling on its own are far from enough and a bigger picture approach was born. Corporations shift to reduction in their expenditure on waste would make more sense than the norm of procure ring goods and then incur cost to dispose them (MITIE). When the workers think about climate change and its consequences, there is a tendency to think linearly, but unfortunately nature acts exponentially. A trifling increase in universal temperature has an extensive effect on weather. The flow of wind is enhanced by difference in temperature which has the effect of change in wind patterns. The increased demand of energy has been the cause of power shortages in the less developed countries. Cause-effect in this is unreliable energy in these regions puts them in higher risk of famine, disease and economic slowdown which could impact world politics. This would be the time for more innovation and creative ideas in light of energy demands in addition to resource consumption (Friedman 125-164). Conclusion Waste is a product of social and business activities and leaders have to face the reality that the future of their corporations with how well they take care of the planet. Adair informs that everything is connected, it is only that we cannot always see the connection (Friedman 45-64). The company use of waste hierarchy of reduce, reuse and recycle is what makes stakeholders develop trust with the company. The take home for everyone is that energy is the key ingredient to a better environment (Freeman 26). Energy poverty is a sure threat to everyone because in states without reliable power will mean economies cannot grow as they should, children cannot attend classes regularly and medicine may not be refrigerated. The most unfortunate thing is that the nations and people who are least responsible for global warming are the most affected in regard to adapting to higher temperatures, unreliability of electricity and increased rainfall. Civil unrest will be high in these regions and in an effort to protect economic interest will inevitably drive political radicalism. In absence of power, basic information necessary to compete in a global marketplace is unavailable, makes it difficult to exchange ideas and goods. The citizens of these states will due to discontent in realizing their full potential turn violent. By buying more fossil fuels from nations that still hold conservative and extremist groups the world is indirectly strengthening their economies consequently their views. Unlike UK where the pounds help provide shelter, build schools while the same for the conservative oil rich it is more anti-modern elements, intolerance and anti-women rights. Overreliance in oil therefore does not only change the climate and ecosystem but has also an effect in regions (Friedman 75-143). Works Cited John Adair.
