Five-Year Career Plan My Five-Year Career Plan I have decided to pursue a career in Radiology Technology based on my passion for Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. Since my childhood, I have always been yearning to pursue a career which will enable me to directly participate in helping people in my community to solve their day to day problems. For this reason, I have worked hard and excelled in the above subject areas right from my high school (Stroh, L. K. et al., 2002). Therefore, I am convinced that working as a radiographer will grant me an opportunity to achieve this goal.

At the same time, it will put me to work in a challenging environment that requires a lot of keenness, determination, accuracy, compassion and good interpersonal communication skills which of course I believe I have. The other reason why I would like to pursue this career is because it is a very lucrative profession. For sure, radiography is by no means comparable to any other career. Hence, a part from enjoying a high status in the society, I will be assured of high salaries. In fact, after qualification, I will have to benefit from a starting salary of $75,000 per year.

This will progressively rise as I continue delivering my services to my patients and gaining experience. Later, upon climbing to the managerial level, I would reap more benefits. I do not only aim to become a radiographer, but to eventually rise to the position of a team manager of the Diagnostic Medical Imaging department within a Trauma Hospital shortly after getting employment. In order to achieve my goal, it is my responsibility to acknowledge that is not a simple task. It will have to take me a total of five years.

Therefore, according to my plan, I will take the first four years in the university. During this time, I will do my Bachelors Degree in Medical Imagery Science. This is a four-year course which will equip me with the necessary skills to take images of patients using the mobile X-ray machinery, magnetic resonance imaging (RMI) Scans and the computed tomography (CT) scans. These are highly developed equipments which will be used to produce high quality radiographic images of patients to be used by the radio physicians to diagnose and treat patients.

A part from learning how to take the patients’ images, the degree course will give me an opportunity to learn basic and fundamental skills on how I can effectively handle my patients. First, I will get to know much about how to use my communication skills to handle my patients. Since each of them is from a diverse socio-economic and cultural background, by developing a good rapport with them, I will definitely have to listen to their problems, feel their pains and be empathetic to them as I seek to offer them the most benevolent services that they require from me.

My contributions are important because the images from the EX-Ray are relied upon by the physicians before they take any action. Moreover, pursuing a bachelor’s degree will add value to me and prepare me for the challenging task ahead. Without a proper knowledge of the human body morphology, it is not possible to do this job. Therefore, this will be one of the most significant skills that I will learn from the university. By spending a lot of time studying Biology, I will be in the right path of having a deeper knowledge about the body structure.

It will make it easier for me to take the right pictures which can be useful to the physicians. At the same time, I will learn about the importance of endurance, flexibility, compassion and accuracy. These are the core attributes of a radiographer which should be taught in the university. After successfully completing my bachelor’s degree course, I will need to move another step ahead. First, I will have to take the prerequisite one-year Professional Development Year (PDY). During this time, I will need to sacrifice another whole year to work in an accredited clinical radiology department to serve in this facility.

It will act like an internship in which I will get a chance to be mentored by seasoned professionals who have been serving in the field for a long time (Meggitt, 2008). Under their mentorship, I will gain the required experiences, knowledge and skills necessary for my development in this challenging, but rewarding career. Upon a successful completion of PDY, I will proceed into another step. Here, I will organize to take the entry level examinations as I seek to be given the required accreditation.

Although it is not a mandatory requirement, I will have to take this test since it will increase my chances of getting employment after passing through all the stages. After accreditation, I will apply for state certification so as to be authorized by my state government. Later, I will register with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) before eventually registering with the State Health Board in my state (Glasser, 2003). However, since I am planning to assume managerial role in my career, I will have to get employment then settle in my job and gain the necessary experience.

By 2017, I am planning to be a manager of the Diagnostic Medical Imaging department within a Trauma Hospital. By gaining such a position, I will get an opportunity to be a team leader and be in charge of my colleagues and juniors. During that time, I will have to demonstrate my managerial skills to unite my workers and motivate them to do their best for the sake of our patients (Spiegel, 2005). This will help the organization to effectively serve the patients and gain their confidence. This will not only build the reputation of the organization, but also put it in a better position of appealing to the general public and accomplishing its short and long-term goals.
