March 20, From Life Skills to Work Skills through the Digital Access Campaign After the computer ial the kidsgathered around me and gave me a warm thank-you song and dance performance. Being a volunteer for the Digital Access Campaign of the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, I learned several skills that contributed to my personal growth. These skills enabled me to develop new skills, while also improving existing ones. I learned motivation, persuasion, presentation, and group management skills that matter to the course and to my goals of managing and leading groups in an organisation, and I also realized that I want to develop my team leadership skills more through different programs.

I learned motivation, presentation, and group management skills when I gave computer tutorials to a range of fifteen to twenty kids, as part of the Digital Access Campaign. The kids varied in number because during some tutorial days, several of them were not able to come due to school, work, or home responsibilities or activities. Nevertheless, I learned motivation skills by knowing how to motivate children who were struggling with the lessons because of lack of confidence in using technology or poor communication skills in expressing learning needs and issues.

An example is Alicia, who kept on saying that she did not know how to use computers because they do not have a computer at home. I motivated her to learn by describing the benefits of using computers, such as accessing the Internet that can help with her studies and learn new practical skills, such as Photoshop and picture-taking skills, which are relevant to her because she loved taking pictures. Aside from motivation, I also learned presentation skills because I made a presentation on how to use computers.

I honed this skill because I became more sensitive to my target audience, which are children from different ages with obviously different learning motivations and styles. I tried my best to accommodate as many learning styles as possible by combining audio, images, and hands-on learning for the presentation. Besides presentation skills, I also improved my group management skills. I learned that my students are a group of people with different personalities and aspirations, but they have a common goal of learning how to use computers efficiently and effectively.

I tried my best to connect these uses to their different needs too, which I learned by asking them about their expectations, backgrounds, and hobbies before the class started. Aside from these skills, I learned persuasion skills when we asked people to donate old computers to kids. I talked to several families and influenced them to donate old computers, since they are buying new ones very soon. I also persuaded several families to participate in the program in other ways, such as participating in the tutorials and other aspects of the program.

They found the program useful in enhancing the quality of community life through boosting child education and learning through computer skills. All these skills matter to the course and to my goals of managing and leading groups in an organisation, and I also realized that I want to develop my team leadership skills more by being active in community programs that are team-based. Motivation and group management skills are critical to managing groups in the workplace, as well as applying course concepts on motivation and group building.

Presentation and persuasion skills are related to course skills for managing people and presenting ideas to them for change management programs, for instance. In addition, I plan to hone my team leadership skills more by being active in community and academic programs that are team-based. I aim to increase my leadership skills by testing leadership theories and learning if and how they apply in real settings and different kinds of teams and groups. Thus, my volunteer experience expanded my course learning, as well as my personal growth.
