Management Philosophy Management Philosophy A philosophy is a belief that people practice about something or about a certain field. Management is not an isolated field when philosophy is involved because the division is guided by various viewpoints. There are numerous management philosophies, but a person must choose some of them to manage effectively because it is impossible to put all ideas into practice. I have experience in human resource management because I serve as a human director in my organization. My personal skills and my experience as a human resource have influenced my management beliefs and attitudes. In this paper, I will analyze my management philosophy and how it has been influenced by my skills, experience, and knowledge of other theories. The first philosophy that I consider significant is the principle of efficient planning. Managers may accomplish very little or no realizations at all if they fail to plan. This is because the lack of a plan means that a person may do anything at anytime. Planning begins with the determination of desired goals because they guide managers in choosing strategies that help them realize these objectives (Covey, 2013). After determining the desirable aims, managers then carry out research to help them choose the best approaches to realize them; the investigation may be carried out through extensive reading to find out how other organizations perform their tasks or it may be through testing and analyzing of past experiences. The next step after choosing the strategy to apply is implementation that involves putting the strategies into practice to achieve the goals. Evaluation then helps leaders to determine the goals that they have achieved and those that they have failed to accomplish so that they may develop techniques of improving the results. My experience as a human resource manager has made me to value this philosophy because whenever the department fails to plan, it ends up achieving results that are below its capacity. Also the fact that human resource division deals with recruitment means that the department has to plan to determine the type of employees to hire and those that need to be fired (Drucker, 2008). The second philosophy is that efficient communication is vital for the success of managers in their career and also for organizations that aim at realizing high sales and returns (Drucker, 2008). Communication involves exchanging information with other managers, employees, and subordinate staff members. Charismatic leadership style advocates for both verbal and non-verbal communication. This means that managers may use words, image, graphs, and signs to pass information to other workers. The fifth habit of the book, “Seven habits,” also argues that managers should seek out for understanding from others, and this can only be achieved through successful communication (Covey, 2013). I have learnt the significance of communication through personal experiences that have proved to me that one needs to converse with others to understand what they want and also to be understood. As a human resource manager, I have also realized that in the absence of communication, even if a firm uses the best strategies and the most developed technologies, it may fail to realize its potential. My next principle of management is that of involving employees in the decision making process in order to achieve the set goals. Elton Mayol has influenced me into this belief through his theory of human relations that argues that positive management is the one that involves workers in planning and making decisions (Drucker, 2008). While managers involve employees in their organizations, they should also ensure that the workers appreciate working in teams. This is because even if employees are involved individually, this would be a waste of time because there would be no cooperation; hence coordination would also be impractical. Welch argues that employees form the software part of an organization, which is critical in the achievement of high sales, profits, and customer satisfaction (Welch, 2005). The human resource department has also taught me that while employees are essential in a firm, as a manager, I should ensure that the organization hires employees with the right skills. This is because workers have different skills and achievement that make them suitable for diversified jobs (Covey, 2013). Therefore, even if an organization involves incompetent workers in making decisions, it may fail to achieve its objectives. Incompetent employees lead to low results because this means that the software of the company is damaged (Welch, 2005). My fourth philosophy of management is that a successful manager should also be a victorious leader. This is because while management involves directing workers on what to do and how to do it, leadership entails influencing and motivating people to achieve the goals that they think are unattainable. The characteristics that enable leaders to be influential motivators include creativity, efficient communication, integrity, courage, broad mindedness, and objectivity (Drucker, 2008). According to Steve Mayers, individuals may acquire these leadership qualities by undergoing thorough training and gaining experience in the job market (Welch, 2005). My experience as a manager has enabled me to acquire these leadership skills, some of which I did not have before being employed. For example, I have learned how to be broad minded by thinking beyond the present. Being broad minded enables me to motivate employees to work hard and aim at achieving the company’s goals as well as their personal objectives. I have also gained courage that enables me to face both awful and amusing experiences from a positive point of view. I have also learned about leadership through reading and researching widely; for example, Steve Job’s charismatic leadership style has impacted on me positively. Management philosophies are beliefs that guide managers in performing their functions efficiently. There is a broad range of philosophies that are applicable, but individuals choose the ones that enable them to achieve their goals. I believe that successful management involves efficient communication, leadership, involvement of workers in making decisions, and planning. Planning is the greatest among these principles because it involves developing objectives and strategies that lead to the achievement of the goals. Communication, on the other hand, enables managers to inform workers about an organization’s plans and approaches. This is while leadership enables managers to motivate workers to achieve high goals.
