Air Carriers There was an air catastrophe involving a Nigerian Aviation Development Co. flight on October 29, 2006. The plane, which was headed to Sokoto from Abuja crashed and killed 96 passengers. The crash occurred only 76 seconds after going airborne. This was verified in the report submitted by the national aviation investigation body. The report singled out the pilot as a contributing figure for following incorrect procedures. Though bad weather may have been blamed for the accident, the pilot was at fault.
The airline in general was at fault for failing to note the conditions and react appropriately (SaharaReporters). The manual followed by the pilot and his cockpit staff was blank at the advance weather conditions section. This implies that there were no guidelines or procedures for the staff to follow in case of bad weather. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had a hand in it for approving the manual even though it was faulty (SaharaReporters). The airline contributed to the problem by letting such important matter go without notice.
The pilot resulted to use of trial and error procedures in the face of adverse weather conditions resulting to the crash.A notable reason as to why airlines cut on safety corners concerns sustenance of employees. The management of the airlines intends to offer better monetary and non-monetary benefits to their staff and overlooks important safety issues. In the case of the Nigerian plane crash, there is a possibility that cost associated with the manual was overlooked and so was training of pilots in relation to adverse weather conditions.
Additionally, airlines cut costs to offer best incentives because of the wage competition in the aviation industries. While doing it, they overlook the safety importance or redirect funds for better safety standards.Works CitedSaharaReporters.
