Extract of sample "Analysis of Article about the Validity of the Two Main Projects of National Culture by Steven Voss"

In making this comparison, the author combines the Toynbee and Huntington models of civilizations. According to the author, members of a civilization are characterized by higher-order identity, and therefore there are cultural similarities within such civilizations. The sample involved in the study consisted of pairs between 780 and 3655, depending on whether the Hofstedean or GLOBE model is used. The author’s main hypothesis was that Hofstedean and GLOBE models should show significant validity based on the Toynbee-Huntington model.

Pearson, Spearman, Ratio, and Composite tests were used in measuring the validity. Based on the results, the author notes that GLOBE practices, GLOBE values, and the Hofstedean model significantly predict the civilization models, although the latter two are the strongest. This however supports the author’s main hypothesis. However, the Hofstede model appears to be superior to the GLOBE model in terms of validity. Given that Hofstede had suggested an optimal number of cultural dimensions, the results of the study suggest that some of the GLOBE study variables are merely motivational domains and not cultural dimensions.

In conclusion, the author recommends that future studies should attempt to examine whether or not data from World Values Survey may be taken as one or more cultural dimensions. Interesting/important points 1. The Hofstede model appears to be superior to the GLOBE study in terms of validity. This is an important point because it shows how accurate and important Hofstede’s cultural dimensions are when examining national cultures. 2. Both the GLOBE and Hofstede models predict the civilization models, and this means that both can be used when examining national cultures.

Therefore, the two can be used to complement one another as opposed to substituting one another. 3. It is interesting to note that the GLOBE study and Hofstede model are the only two major projects that have attempted to quantify the dimensions of national culture. This means that national culture is an area that requires further study and research in the future.
