Algorithm in Today’s WorldThis is a definition essay aimed at understanding the definition, origin and current use of the word ‘algorithm’.Oxford dictionary defines algorithm as a set of rules are instructions which are well defined in order to find a solution to a specific problem (Oxford, 2004). In simple words, algorithm can be defined as a predefined procedure to be followed to arrive at a specific solution for a problem. An algorithm is best illustrated by the concept of a recipe.

Like a recipe, algorithm is a procedure with definite steps which if followed will result in an answer or a solution to a problem if there is one (MobileReference, 2007).The origin of the word algorithm is in the name of an Arab mathematician, Muhammad ibn Musa abu Djafar Al-Khorezmi. He lived from 780-850 in the region of Baghdad. He was one of the main exponents of numeration and calculation in the Arabic system. Hi work was known is Arabic by the name al-khwarizmi which translated to Latin in the name algorismus.

Over the centuries, the name has been modified many times has now been termed as algorithm (Bauer & Wossner, 1982).Algorithm in today’s world is used mainly in the fields of mathematics and computer science. In computer science, algorithm is procedure that takes into account numerous input situations which are possible and then transforms them into a desired output. The algorithm concept mainly originated as a possible way to solve mathematical problems in a well defined manner (Skiena, 2008).
