Month Year Quiz 13 Abolitionists were blamed for Nat Turner’s rebellion. 2. The Mason Dixon Line is an imaginary line dividing North and South. Originally named after the two men who drew the lines to settle a dispute between the borders of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. 3. Fifty percent of all the cotton in the south was grown by slaves. 4. White southerners feared blacks because in some places whites were outnumbered by blacks. 5. Whites thought slavery was good for blacks because it protected them from the real world of work. Their fear was loss of fortunes as then the plantation owners would have to pay wages. 6. Overall, most owners had 10 slaves or less. 7. Overseers usually oversaw the work of slaves on large plantations. 8. Paternalism is the attitude that southerners had towards slaves. The plantation owners thought they were being beneficial to slaves by providing them with food and shelter. The attitude also suggested that slaves did not know what was best for themselves, thus whites had to decide what was best for the slaves. 9. George Fitzhugh thought women had the right to protection. 10. What caused the most anguish for mistresses on plantations was the realization that their husbands usually had sexual relations with slave women and had babies with them. 11. Slave children usually began to work about the age of seven. 12. Family relationships mattered most in a slave’s life. It is what they had very little of. 13. Few African Americans who were slaves attended church. However, African American’s looked forward to heaven where all their burdens and cares would be done away with, as many of the spirituals attest to. The church they attended with their masters usually emphasized the reasons why they were slaves and cursed. 14. There were few slave rebellions in the south because slaves were treated very harshly. 15. Small farmers in the south grew tobacco, rice and corn. 16. Normal folk, small farm holders, who were neither rich nor poor were the core of upcountry society. 17. Non-slave holding people were concerned that their voices and needs were not being heard in the political process. They did not have enough money to be powerful and because of the 3/5ths clause plantation owners had more power. 18. A planter was a plantation land owner who had at least 20 slaves. 19. Nebraska, Kansas, Utah, and New Mexico territories helped make up Colorado territory in 1861. 9. The Kansas Nebraska Act set aside the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and allowed states to decide for themselves if they wanted to be slave or free states. Both sides of the slavery issue went to Kansas and it literally became a war zone over the issue. It was called “Bleeding Kansas.” John Brown came from Kansas. 10. Slavery was the main issue of the 1856 election. 11. Republicans thought southern democrats were responsible for the violence in Kansas. 12. John Brown’s reaction to the sacking of Lawrence was to murder five men who were pro slavery. 13. The Dred Scott decision was a Supreme Court Decision that said blacks could never be citizens and Congress had no authority to outlaw slavery in any territory. Even if blacks reached a free state, their masters could come and get them and take them back into slavery. 14. Kansas was admitted to the Union as a free state. 15. Because of the debacle at Harper’s Ferry, everyone thought John Brown was insane. 16. The slave states did not vote for Lincoln because he was not on the ballot. 17. By February 1861 there were 6 states that formed the confederacy. They were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. 18. Former President Millard Fillmore was the Know Nothing’s candidate for President in 1856. 19. South Carolina was the first state to succeed from the Union. 20. Lincoln’s inaugural address directly states that he does not intend to interfere with the institution of slavery. The Battle of Glorieta Pass in New Mexico Territory kept the Confederacy from entering into Colorado and taking control of the gold mines there. 10. Making sure the south did not get supplies and good battle strategies were two necessary things needed to defeat the Confederacy. The north had industrialization on its side, whereas the south did not. 11. The USS Housatonic was the first ship to be sunk by a submarine. H. L. Hunley from Tennessee invented the submarine. 12. Congress authorized the enrollment of black men in the northern army in 1863. This came after the Emancipation Proclamation. The Massachusetts 54th was the first unit. It was made famous by the movie Glory starring Matthew Broderick. 13. The Confederacy designed a law in 1862 saying that exempted one white man for every 20 slaves. It was also called the Overseer Exemption. During war time, white men were still needed to be on a plantation to make sure the slaves were controlled and did not run away. 14. The Confederate soldiers did not have as varied a diet as Union soldiers. The Confederates ate a dish called “coosh,” which consisted of bacon, water, corn meal and brown gravy. 15. Belle Boyd, a nurse in Virginia, provided the information Stonewall Jackson needed to win the battle of Front Royal/Shenandoah. 16. Yeomen farmers did not have the work force that plantation owners did so the yeomen farmers suffered great financial losses. Plantation owners still had slaves to help harvest the crops. 17. The Legal Tender Act passed in 1862 allowed the government to restructure the nation’s economy during the Civil War. 18. The Homestead Act, The Pacific Railway Act, and the Morrill Act were all passed in 1862 to promote western expansion. 19. The draft riots in New York City were the most extreme reaction to the new draft law of 1863. 20. Gettysburg was the battle that turned the tide of the war in favor of the Union. The riots in Memphis were preceded by Andrew Johnson’s campaign to reorganize the Republican party so that he got rid of all opponents to his plans for Reconstruction. He wanted to create a new party called the National Union party. That party came to and end when the riot broke out. 9. President Johnson was impeached because he was over stepping his authority of his office by defying federal law. 10. The 15th amendment gave ex male slaves the right to vote. 11. The Civil Rights Act of 1875 outlawed “discrimination in transportation, public accommodations and juries.” 12. Scalawags were southerners who supported Reconstruction. 13. The southern states had to rewrite their state constitutions and ratify the 14th amendment to the Constitution before being readmitted to the Union. 14. There were two black senators and twenty black congressmen elected during Reconstruction. 15. Many gangs made up of former confederate soldiers were responsible for guerilla warfare. The most famous was the James-Younger gang. 16. There were many prominent members of Grant’s administration charged with corruption. Among them were the Internal Revenue General, Grant’s own private secretary, the Attorney General, and the Secretary of the Interior. 17. With the election of Rutherford B. Hayes a compromise was made to end Reconstruction because he did not have enough votes to outright win the election. The vote was put to a committee and Hayes won by 1 vote. 18. Texas, Mississippi, Georgia and Virginia did not get to vote in the 1868 election. 19. Georgia was the last rebelling state to be readmitted to the Union in 1870. 20. Lincoln is my favorite president because he redefined the Constitution by saying the government was “of the people, by the people and for the people” in his Gettysburg address. Read More
