He later dropped of school and headed for Indiana to look for better fortune. He turned to be a social worker in the state of Indiana where he used to benefit from the little pennies he gathered. It is here in Indiana where he met Carol. Carol was a daughter of a loyal family in Indiana and had access to a high and loyal life. Roberts and Carol met in a social working day where she had been given a role to supervise the workers. The two fell in love and Carol introduced Roberts to his family. Carol`s family decided to help Roberts to complete his education and also incorporated him in the leadership of Indiana.

In 1900, Roberts married Carols and decided to go back to Illinois. In Illinois by this time, there was political turmoil due to a power struggle among various groups of individuals. There were socialists, anarchist and labor organizations all who were struggling for power. It is at this point Roberts experience in Indiana came to be of help to him to join the Illinois politics. In 1912, he joined the Democratic Party in Illinois and vied for the senator. Carol, on the other hand, was fighting for Congress position.

This was the start of the famous Roberts Family. The two candidates managed to clinch into power and became the rulers of Illinois State. In 1910, Carol gave birth to a son and named him John Harris Roberts. The family also had a couple of other children. Three of the children ventured into investments while the rest two joined politics. The Roberts family continued extending their fame when Carol also vied for the position of the senator while his husband vied for the governor positions. Luckily, they all managed to clinch into power in these topmost positions.
