? Relationship between China and the United s of America Outline Introduction 2. History and Background 3. Economic Relationship 4. Political Relationship 5. Social Relationship 6. Conclusion Relationship between China and the United States of America Introduction The United States of America receives acclamation as one of the most powerful countries in the world with the ability to impose sanctions on various activities in different parts of the world in an effort to attain peaceful co-existence with each other. The country is a member of the Great 8 group composed of the most powerful countries. One other country in the Great 8 group is China considered one of the largest countries in the world with an upper hand in terms of manufacture and shipment of products. It is important to understand the relationship that these two countries have in an effort to figure out the consequent impact that it has on any other relations that the United States has. The public policy to uphold through the paper is the labor and employment policy as the linking relationship between the two countries. History and Background The major types of relationships that these two countries share are political, monetary and social. It is also imperative to grasp an understanding of the history between the relationships between the United States and China that ages back to the year 1844 when there was the signing of the Treaty of Wanghia. The treaty introduced several rules to regulate their association and gave the United States ability to carry out extended trade relations with China just like other foreign powers1. The relations have existed since then and have brought both positive and negative effects on many countries around the world either directly or indirectly. Economic Relationship In 1972, the United States received the leeway to invest in mainland China after being banned earlier citing the dangers of the soviet armies. The prolific relations have been the case ever since with the United States getting to an extent of even outsourcing its companies’ requirements from the country. This has particularly brought up a large drift between the two countries from the fact that the United States claims that China makes use of that opportunity to create counterfeit items and consequently portraying the United States wrongly. These allegations have existed over the last five years where China takes some of the raw materials that it does not have in its country from the products made in the United States and rather than completing the manufacture of the products, the workers under the labor union seek to use the materials. This has led to both countries imposing strict trade tariffs on various investment sectors. The workers in China engage in the creation of replica products with the same name as the legitimate products and sell them both locally and internationally. Research has shown that the greatest export recipient of the Peoples’ Republic of China is the European Union. This union is composed of 27 member states with the most influence coming from France. France has been on the receiving end on this issue of counterfeit products manufactured by China2. Given its power, France has great relations with both the United States and China and this issue places it at a poor position in its associations with the United States. French people buy the commodities from China given that the country provides them at a much cheaper rate and the low transport costs provided the proximity to each other. This has affected France’s economic terms with the United States especially on the case of clothing products and tires that it acquires from China. The United States has many times advised France from the purchase of these counterfeit items from the fact that their usage discriminates the legitimate items provided by the United States and affects the economy negatively. France thus often gets into a cold relationship with the United States concerning this and with a continuation of the negligence, it is common prediction that the number of counterfeit items in the market will increase and the United States will undergo tough times. Political Relationship Another relationship between the two countries that has had its impact on other countries in the world is the political relationship. The trade policy still under the labor policy has always existed as an issue of contention between different government officials in the United States. Prior to the 2008 political campaign, the relationship between the former president, George W. Bush and China was rather unclear. It was stated that the former president had intentionally let the China currency trade low in an effort to foster free trade. The introduction of this was immediately after he had taken over presidency and began spreading his economic policy. Many of the countries affected by these moves were for example Japan, known for importing high amount of corn from the United States3. These countries started losing trust in the United States ability to maintain power and maintain a clean slate in terms of the economic goals. However, with the onset of the 2008 election campaigns and after the election of President Obama, the new president stated that the currency should be set higher with more regulations to uphold the sovereignty of the United States and assist the country make more money to support its citizens. President Obama went ahead and held meetings with Wang Quishan who is China’s Vice Premier. After extended talks, the two agreed on the fact that the United States and China should have the ability to exist peacefully without political interference. The Vice Premier of China stated that the setting of the currency at a higher rate would help improve the quality of work that Chinese people carried out and consequently have better living standards from the increased incomes4. The World Bank also applauded this move as it got the ability to increase the lending rates, which is important for trade regulation. With this better cooperation between the two countries, it is important to note that the United State’s president proposed the isolation of China from the large part of the East Asia region. This was in order to pave way for Obama’s project of containing the issues facing the region by deploying the military to maintain peace in war torn areas and eventually achieve his goal of putting an end to nuclear weapon manufacture in countries such as Iran. Without the fear of a nuclear attack, not only will people have a calm state of mind but will also have a sense of unity as they work towards achieving their set goals5. Disregarding China’s presence in the region would lead to the loss of many lives in the area. This would greatly affect the manner through which the United States is viewed by many third world countries in Africa such as South Africa that look up to the country. The fact that the United States has had the ability to hold talks as to strategize the containment of the condition in the Middle East without affecting the Peoples’ Republic of China got South Africa and other countries with many land disputes such as Congo to respect it. Not only respect is accorded, but also the countries learn from the methods used by the United States to maintain peace and responsibility while trying to resolve other issues and working towards building the nation as now seen in Congo. The country has gone ahead to allow United States to intervene seeking advice and further strengthening their relationship. Eventually, if every country learnt to use peaceful dialogue as a means of communication, there would be peaceful co-existence of people. Social Relationship The social aspect of the relationship between the two countries is one other factor to observe. Human rights are the major issues to discuss in this aspect of the relationship because they are vital for optimal performance in a work place. Still on the labor and employment policy, there were very many differences in terms of the rights given the fact that the United States has developed mainly as a Capitalistic state while China has had influence from all the communist countries around it6. This initially made any relations between the two countries seem rather difficult. However, with increased knowledge and changes in generations, the two countries have had the ability to agree on most issues. In the year 2003, the United States stated that despite the fact that the Peoples’ Republic of China had made some efforts towards incorporating most of the common human rights to its constitution, it was still carrying out reforms in a slow manner and needed to act on that. Earlier on China had made tremendous steps towards improvement of its state by signing the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights7. Initially, China had attained workers from various parts of the world such as Ghana and Saudi Arabia and had them carry out forced labor on their farms. The United States found this rather demining provided the radical steps that the world was making towards an end to slavery and pushed further for the reform of China. In the year 2002, the Chinese government released the political detainees and reunited the oppressed workers with their families. Late in the year 2010, China announced that it had finally freed all the wrongfully imprisoned people in the country and this received many positive remarks from the international community especially the United Nations that works towards peaceful co-existence. This meant that the country had finally agreed to follow all the human right rules and act towards implementing them in the country. Ever since then, the United States has had the ability to send some of its graduates there to work as managers of its international companies’ branches set up there with the hope of sharpening their skills and eventually getting back home to work even harder. Despite the changes made in China, people from other countries have had a fear of going to work there. This is from the fact that they are not assured of their safety and treatment in the country. However, with the noticeable positive relationship between the United States and China, people from different places in the world and especially migrant workers from Korea have had the ability of landing job opportunities in the country. This has worked well to improve the living conditions of the migrant workers. With that trend, they will later assist in the growth of China’s and America’s economy given that most of these workers search for American companies based in China for assured safety. Moreover, this has helped foster relations between the United States and countries in the Middle East that has also helped the country understand military strategies of certain countries such as Pakistan. With this information, the United States can try stopping the manufacture of deadly weapons. Conclusion The understanding of the labor and employment policy in its relation to United States and China connection is important to United States in that the country will learn to review its economic strategies critically when dealing with China. This is because China does not share some of the interests that the United States does and knowing this, the United States can formulate better ideas on how to deal with the country in future. The world gets inspiration from the acts of the United States in terms of approaching problematic areas carefully and learning not to involve innocent countries. I have benefited from the fact that I have learnt more about the labor and employment policy assisting me understand the nature of the issues, what creates the standoffs and the best ways to resolve them.
