A Day in the Life: Dr. G. Alan Yeasted Affiliation: What do you feel the most important role the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) has in the organization? The most important role of the CMO is quality assurance of the hospital in all the departments as well as among the staff. All the meetings the CMO undertakes with each department are all meant at ensuring that the qualities of services being provided in the hospital are top notch (Kassel, 2015). According to Dr. Yeasted, what was his most important focus?

The most important focus of the CMO is that the hospital becomes sustainable in terms of the services it offers, the doctors and other staff it hires among other aspects. It is for this reason that he takes time to go rounds and hold meetings to fulfill this focus of his. Dr. Yeasted commented on his involvement with the budgeting process in the hospital. What was his involvement? As the CMO, Dr. Yeasted is on the finance body making suggestions and approvals for any budgeting to be carried out.

In his role, he has to prioritize issues in order for the most important and necessary at the moment to take precedence in the budget and also have to explain the same to the staff. What type of strategic planning was Dr. Yeasted involved with? What was the strategic plan that he worked on prior to his retirement? With this project, describe what happened. The strategic plan at the moment in the hospital is that of trying to streamline the hospital activities and quality with the new health care policies such as the managed care and affordable care act.

This is still what he worked on and the success is starting to be evident. How was Dr. Yeasted involved with the Chairman of the Board of Directors?Prior to him becoming a CMO, Dr. Yeasted was a Board member of the same hospital and hence has a cordial relationship with the board members including the chairman. This relationship is free of tension as they have known each other for long and have also worked together as physicians. What did Dr. Yeasted find most enjoyable with his position of CMO?

Least enjoyable? The most enjoyable thing is that he gets to change the life of the community by simply making the correct decisions and implementation of the policies which is part of his job as a CMO. The least enjoyable is attending and participating in meetings which take up majority of his time (Kassel, 2015). After viewing the interview, was there anything that surprised you about the position of CMO?I was surprised that the CMO had many roles up their sleeves and sometimes even did not find to practice medicine.

I thought their life was just easy as there were other administrators and the Board in the hospital and hence he only had to do the approving and nothing else. What type of characteristics did Dr. Yeasted identify that were important in a health care administrator?According to Dr. Yeasted, in as much a health care administrator is busy with office work and meetings, he or she needs to set aside side time to visit the patients and interact on an informal basis with the staff to not only create rapport but learn more about the hospital.

What advice did he give you as a student in health care administration? The CMO advices the students who wish to become administrators to become conversant with the issues of finance and take precaution about it. The finances are different from other organizations and hence need different strategies to handle them as well as know how to redistribute and invest them for sustainability. What follow-up questions do you have for Dr. Yeasted? How does one know when he or she is ready to take over a management position like he did?

Why doesn’t the hospital’s Board take over some of his responsibilities and duties to allow him more time to do rounds in hospitals like a normal physician does? ReferencesKassel, M.
