Histologic Technician Histologic Technician It is essential to analyze histology so as to understand histologic technician’s role and responsibilities. There are two experts when histology is concern these are Histology technicians (HTs) and histotechnologists (HTLs) (Carson & Hladik, 2009). HTs and HTLs are experts in slide research for application by scientists and pathologists. The term histology refers to the microscopic training or examination of tissues and their components (Gartner, Hiatt & Gartner, 2011). The two experts prepare tissue sections for microscopic slide readiness for medical scientist or pathologists. HTs and HTLs slice, stain and cover slip atomic tissue sections on microscope slides to discover signs of illness, disease, or malignancies within the patient’s body. It is apparent that histologic technicians have a broad selection of practice settings (Carson & Hladik, 2009). Hospitals, clinics, for-profit laboratories, and public health amenities form the broad space that these technician can further their career following completion of the course. Other chances for histologic technicians are in manufacturing study, marine biology, forensic pathology, and veterinary pathology. The main or core duty of a histology technician is to prepare the tissue, slices it, fix it to slides, apply applicable stains, and wrap slips the slides for analysis by a pathologist. In brief, histology is the study of cytology, tissue, and in general the study of cells thus allows and fine needle aspirations and pap smears, which are what cytology technician operates with. The relationship between a HT and cyto technician is that a histology technician analyzes cells and prepares tissue for the cyto technician to interpret on slides (Gartner, Hiatt & Gartner, 2011). The study is broad as it involves analysis of the microscopic anatomy of tissues and cells of animals and plants (Gartner, Hiatt & Gartner, 2011). It is normally performed by studying tissues and cells through sectioning and dyeing, followed by assessment under an electron microscope or light microscope (Carson & Hladik, 2009). Histological analysis or training may be conducted via tissue culture, where live tissue or cells can be separated and sustained in a proper environment exterior the body for diverse research projects. The capability to imagine or differentially recognize microscopic components is normally enhanced through the employment of histological stains. This study is an essential instrument of medicine and biology and thus making histologic technician very important member of the discipline. In recent years, histological techniques has transformed into an increasingly complex, integrating an entire variety of specialties and a corresponding abrupt increase in the breadth and level of skills and knowledge demanded by the examiners of trainees in histopathology and histology technology (Suvarna, Layton & Bancroft, 2013). The strategy of histological staining depends on the handling of tissue sections with dyes in solvents which will respond more or less exclusively with identified tissue and cell structures. In its classical manner, a standardized theory of tissue staining is not available since the mechanisms of dye adhering with a variety of cell mechanism are fairly heterogeneous (Parma, 2011). Thus, traditional histological staining ought to be seen in correlation with the chemical and morphological behaviour of cell components, and, histological stainings are very multifaceted. In a precise case, both natural and artificial dye stains could be because of (a) physical adsorptions or absorption; (b) chemical reactions; and (c) physico-chemical procedures. Typically, chemical and physical procedures are running in corresponding (Gartner, Hiatt & Gartner, 2011). A histotechnician integrate technological skills with scientific acquaintance to execute various tissue-correlated processes in the histology laboratory (Carson & Hladik, 2009). A histotechnician basically prepares and stains cell and tissue for the regular and special detection of fungus, bacteria, and cancer and tissue constitution abnormalities, for analysis by a pathologist. These experts also must have serenity, fine manual dexterity precision, and the capability to work with least supervision (Gartner, Hiatt & Gartner, 2011). This discipline is of very minimal patient contact. The occupation is very significant. Without histologic technicians, diagnosing a sick person would seem difficult. It goes without say that a pathologist would be out of work in case HTs cease to exist or refuse operate. They are in high demand in the entire region of America and other parts of the world. They will only befall more admired as the baby boomers cultivate in dimension. However, it is in public domain that few people have heard of HTs, let alone those who are contemplating study that is medical related (Carson & Hladik, 2009). There is a rhetoric question that questions the reason this field has not gained the respect it deserves? Many experts acknowledge that it is a challenge to convince individuals appreciate this profession. The question is soon being fully answered since the demand for the study is gaining momentum. So what is the role of a histology technician in medical discipline? Well, the first thing they do is to prepare a slide for microscopic assessment by pathologists. Their areas of routine responsibilities comprise of processing, microtomy, staining of slides, embedding, and unique stains (Carson & Hladik, 2009). The technicians are involved in a processing run that infiltrates the cell or tissue with reagents, commonly as alcohol or xylene, and gets it prepared for embedding. After processing, the cell is covered (embedded) with dissolved paraffin wax and allowed to harden into a chunk. The tissue is then set to be cut onto a slide. A microtome is applied to slice the block keenly into sections, micrometers in breadth. The desired segment is then put onto a slide and set to be dyed. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) is the most ordinary stain for the mainstream of the slides that run via a high speed lab. Special stains are used to present detailed tissue types in reverence to the subjected diagnosis. After the slide is discoloured, it is then prepared for microscopic assessment (Mercer 2012). This field offers flexible hours that are largely suitable to individuals interested. A science associated two year degree is appropriate before seeking admission for the 9 month Histology lesson. Although this discipline may be translucent to the medical type, it still offers the backbone of every patient analysis, and shall be ignored no further (Gartner, Hiatt & Gartner, 2011). Under all-purpose supervision, the Histology Tech undertakes all laboratory measures as necessary according to established health facility and departmental procedures and policies. HTs Core Responsibilities in Job environment HTs perform diagnosis in an appropriate manner so as to get accurate and precise results. Sustain benchmark in stat examination-both in and out client. They have the ability to coordinate concurrent tests/procedures correctly. Performs and record QC accurately. Consistently determines suitability and integrity of specimens (Mercer 2012). They must ensure to maintain safe and clean work area. Produces and reports precise results and performs maintenance troubleshooting efficiently. Correctly and safely cuts, embeds, stains and labels tissue specimens. Accurately cover slips and labels every slide and files all blocks and slides. Consistently illustrates collaboration and prioritizes portfolio based on volume (Ferguson Publishing, 2009). Histology Specialists comprise both Histologists and Histologic Technicians.  Histologists are also known as Histotechnologists.  Both are mandated to organize tissue samples that are utilized by doctors to establish if a patient has an illness, malignancy or dysfunction.  These experts prepare samples by utilising equipment to delicately slice tissue specimens.  They then put the thin sections on microscope slides and uses chemicals to stain them so significant structures are observable (Ferguson Publishing, 2009).  Histologic Technicians execute their duties under the management of a pathologist to organize tissue or cell specimens for analysis. They execute gross tissue analysis and laboratory processes to show microscopic configuration (Carson & Hladik, 2009). HTs solve problems, show ethics and patient discretion, and use chemical cautiously and universal safety measures. Histologic Technicians work jointly with laboratory employees to give doctors with data for making an analysis. To function in most laboratory amenities, Histologic Technicians must be authorized by the ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) in US (Suvarna, Layton & Bancroft, 2013).
