Extract of sample "Implementing PACS and RIS Systems"

RIS and PACs are awaiting a major upgrade in 7 years.
By introducing the two systems in its radiology system, Amiri hospital aimed at transforming its workflow, applications, servers, and troubleshooting in the radiology department to become highly knowledgeable. The systems were also aimed at positively impacting the department’s ability to deal with software and hardware issues that had been a major setback in the department for many years. PACS and RIS systems were introduced in Amiri to check the entire system for errors and backups, to install IMPAX workstations and RIS clients, to configure and modify AGFA products requirements, and to have additional modalities to RIS and PACs (Bushong, 1997, p. 67)
By implementing the RIS and PACS system, the radiology department of Amiri hospital will be in a position to take appointments for some modularity like CT scans, angiography MRI m Ultrasound and fluoroscopy. By the end of the implementation process, the system will be best placed to link the whole Amiri hospital system and will easily process all the hospital staff and patients more so radiology and radiologist specialists' information.

2. Outline the rationale for selecting the change.
Following the lengthy, troublesome, and stressful experienced patients and the staff in the Amiri radiology department as a result of the old process that the hospital was using which proved to be time-consuming and exacting, the management had to seek appreciative alternatives like the RIS, HIS and the PACs systems (Bushong, 1997, p. 83). By implementing the PACS and RIS systems correctly, the hospital hoped to attain maximum efficiency of the two systems. The experience in the hospital is expected to be efficient and pleasant after the implementation. PACS and RIS will be able to maximize CR and DR effects to meet the current radiology expectations.
3. Discuss the organizational impact you hope the change will have and the expected outcome(s).
The implementation of PACs and RIS is expected to receive some objections from the staff after the introduction but this will change as soon as the implementation is over and done correctly ensuring the hospital and especially the radiology department is on the desired track. When applied correctly, Amiri hospital will immediately be aligned in the right way and will assist the health sector and medical community in Kuwait to fairly compete with developed countries when it comes to high levels of scientific care given to patients and the medical terms for every integrated service. With the system in place and running efficiently, it is hoped that the time will come when all the health sectors in Kuwait will manage to have a single system containing the records for patients (Huda, 2009, p. 91)
When fully implemented, the Clinical labs in the hospital with the radiology diagnostics will be best placed to provide the best and most accurate results and services. The hospital’s extensive menus as well as other unique services offered will enable the hospital to stand out as the center of choice for both providers and patients. The hospital will be special and unique in its administration providing the best services. PACS and RIS systems will offer the best solutions in the radiology department Imaging Centers like Practice Analysis Workflow, embedded Document Management, and Mammography Tracking (Huda, 2009, p. 61).
4. Discuss the potential threats to implementing the change.
Cost is the most straightforward threat as well as a limitation to the process of implementing PACS and RIS systems in Amiri hospital as all the budgeting has to be done by the government of Kuwait. Now that Amiri hospital has been recognized as one of the leading government hospitals in Kuwait that offer free care to citizens and charge low fees for noncitizens, the implementation of such systems is likely to face obstacles of not being appropriately allocated the required amount and resources by the Ministry of Health enough to purchase and implement the hardware system.
The other threat concerns the old staff including doctors and old technologists who are most likely to find it hard to learn and adopt the new technology. The other possible challenge will be database migration when it comes to divorcing PACS and RIS vendors. Cases of patient information being mismatched are likely to be experienced after the system has been introduced (Wang, 2010, p. 42). There are possibilities of the hospital experiencing cases of uncertainties when it comes to the interpretations of mismatched data. Onerous challenges may also be witnessed such as information being omitted while some will be mislabeled. Read More
